True Heroism

When Napolean was sentenced to exile on the island of St.Helene, an English Newspaper opined  that this military genius would sooner kill himself than be exiled. Napolean heard the comment and said, “I believe suicide as the most abominable of all crisis, and I cannot find any reason for its justifications. It’s  coward’s crime. How can a man call himself brave if he cannot bear life’s ups and downs? True heroism consists in facing adverse fortune however great I might be and being able to meet the challenge.”

SAPTHATHI RE-UNION CELEBRATION

Due to the  GREAT Jubilee of Christu Jayanti   and   the Re-Union Sapthathi , this year is  doubly important for us.  Through out the world while the Universal Church is celebrating the Great Jubilee visibly with all its greatness, we give much importance along with the Great Jubilee to the Sapthathi Re-Union Celebration. Definitely, it is an occasion for us to praise our God for the blessings showered upon the Church in a special way for last 70years and, at the same time, to understand more of the Church in details.
What is Malankara Church?  The following explanation given by , His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Cyril Mar Baselios, the Head of the Malankara Catholic Church  makes us understand well of the Malankara Church. "It generally stands for the ancient Christian community,  which, while claiming its ecclesial origin form the preaching of the Apostle St.Thomas, separated itself of the Holy see of Rome as a result of its revolt against the latinisation tendency of the  Portuguese missionaries in 1653. This Malankara Community remains today further divided as the Malankara Orthodox, Jacobite, Marthomite and  partly C.S.I Churches. Through the tireless efforts of this church for communions with the Holy See of Peter in Rome, a section of this community has regained communion with the Holy See of Rome, accepting the primacy of the Pope. Thus this ecclesial community, as it had legitimately grown up with its apostolic and ecclesial traditions , was canonically acknowledged and established in 1930. This community has about 300,000 faithful today and is known as the Malankara Catholic, leaving more  than 2.5 million people in the non-catholic section." (Ref.  "Emerging Trends in Malankara Catholic Theology",p.165-6).

Malankara Church as an Apostolic Church has assumed all the God-given responsibilities and she tries her best to make the responsibilities fulfilled wherever she is. Hence,  she came to Delhi Mission and  continues  her work here despite of so many hurdles she faces in the way she has to go.  Greater cooperation and readiness to work hard for the Glory of God are the keys to keep the Church in Delhi Mission alive and strong, discharging effectively her responsibilities.
It is greatly acknowledged that what we are now in this Delhi Mission is the result of the toil, tears, blood, money and prayers of hundreds of those who love the Malankara Church with utmost sincerity. How much was given to the church in His Name so much was the blessing they received from Him in various ways.  We believe in a God who puts much weightage to  one's heart, not on what  one has.  On the occasion of this celebration let us offer our prayers for our church in    Delhi mission and remember all those who have worked hard for us in our prayers. Let our ever-loving God bless us all.
Fr.Cherian Mambrakuzhy

REUNION SAPTHATHI- A LAYMAN'S PERSPECTIVE

The Malankara Church has grown up, no doubt, considerably during the last 70 years of its communion with 'Universal Church'.  The rich heritage that we share as an ancient Christian community ( St.Thomas Christians) with  deep rooted spiritual traditions and cultural values has always been a driving force in our spiritual life. As we look at the growth and maturity (theological, spiritual and liturgical) acquired within a short span of 70years there are a lot  that make us so proud of and happy. Hence, let us thank our Lord wholeheartedly for all that He has done for us a Church.

On the  occasion of the 70th anniversary of our Re-Union Movement, it is, as far as we are concerned, a time for an introspection and  reflection of the past,  that will enable us to go forward much improved.  It is a fact that there are elements that must, by all means, be eliminated from the life of the church for attainment of her  God-given goals. The measures we should adopt, at this juncture,  are of rededication, renewal and commitment to the Church  in all levels.

We have come to this Delhi and work hard to meet both ends because  there is no alternative for us.  The strength we need to go forward without falling down is to be drawn  from the faith inherited traditionally through the church. It is painful to see that the church that makes us spiritually nourished and moulds us in the way desired in Kerala  is not able to discharge her duties adequately in Delhi Mission. Still we are  undergoing  in a situation where the privileges and rights granted by Holy See to flourish and develop to fulfill her mission is, in one way or other,  denied. What is possible in other parts of India is not possible in Delhi Mission. Why? Hope that the answer will be available as early as possible.
In this new Millennium,  let us all as the members of the Malankara Church try our best to keep our church more active and effective in the Delhi Mission. No divisive thinking is, in any form,  appreciated in the process of making the Church in Delhi Mission more relevant and fruit yielding. Adequate sacrifices and suffering for the church are  inevitable from the part of her faithful members.  At the same time, this occasion can be  viewed  as a reminder  for the church that  her  responsibility to  keep her children always nourished spiritually and make her availability felt among her children always.  Yes, a new way of being of the Church in the New Millennium. Let us pray together for God's grace.

Dr. Kaleekal

Family

The prayer following admits the virtues that family life bestow upon its members: “ even though the first hour of my day is hectic when socks are lost, toast is burned, tempers are short; that you Lord for my family. There are many who are lonely”.  The pity is that lonely people are often unhappy and lead a life in a vacuum. To dissolve loneliness, togetherness is a must.
When we look into history we read that the family system has played an important role in the development of mankind. All thinking people aptly recognize that the family is the nucleus of civilization. “ The security and elevation of the family and of family life are the prime objects of civilizations, and ultimate ends of all industry, “ says social scientist Eliot in the ‘The Happy Life’.   The Universal Declaration of Human Rights describes family as the natural and fundamental unit of society. Its protection and progress holds out a promise to usher the people in an era of peace and prosperity. The family also channels the energy and talents of an individual.
There is nothing so bitter as the bitterness of suffering alone. Bitterness imprisons life; the family releases it. Bitterness sickens life; the family heals it. Among the privileges of a family is the opportunity to share some of the deeper feelings of human life- the joys and sorrows, victories and defeats, sobs and smiles, agony and ecstasy. “ The family is the only preserving and healing power counteracting any historical, intellectual or spiritual crisis not matter of what depths,” says Ruth Anshen in the Family: Its Function. The family dwelling has been described by many saints as an oasis in the desert of failures and frustrations.
