THE KINGDOM OF GOD AS GOD'S UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
From the Bible it is very evident that Jesus has come down to this world with a vision of reality. Definitely, Jesus vision teaches us how we should look at reality. For Jesus reality was not threatening or hostile; rather it was ultimately gracious and compassionate. He expressed this experience in poetic imagery like Matthew 6:26-33. For Jesus, nature was filled with God's glory, cosmic generosity and intensive care. Thus, behind all reality we find a God who cares, who is in love with creation and who reaches out to His creatures with compassionate solidarity. The word "compassionate" has the connotation of "wombishness." That means loving the way a mother loves the child of her womb, nourishing ,giving life. According to theologians, it is, in the OT, a feeling often expected of Yahweh who has mother-love (Is 49:15, Jr. 31: 20) or father-love ( Ps 103:13; Is 63:15-16) for Israel. It is so evident that this womb-love of Yahweh which leads to forgiveness for his waywardness.
In the New Testament we often see a Jesus who reacts to the crying human needs with a messianic compassion(Mk. 1:41; 6:34; Mt 9:36; 14: 14; 20: 34; Lk 7:13 etc., ). The Kingdom of God in Jesus' message is God's unconditional love for his creature. This love revealed in Jesus Christ, has the sole purpose of leading all human beings and ultimately all of creation to participation in God's own life and love. Through various parables of Jesus this is getting revealed especially through the three stories: the prodigal Son, the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin(Lk 15). They reveal the true image of God: a God whose basis for dealing with us is unbelievable , compassionate love. These parables precisely point out that God is someone who acts out of love and not out of rationality or even common sense because the behavior in all three parables is the most unlikely that a reasonable human being would take. This is the Good News of God's Kingdom to which Jesus wants us to be converted and in which we are called to believe.
As we look at the ministry of Jesus: his "eating and drinking with outcasts" again we find the most striking image of God. His table fellowship with outcasts was an acted out parable revealing the compassionate God, who desires to embrace all human beings in one great community of brothers and sisters. A new order is starting, based not just on justice but on God's goodness and kindness. Justice gets subordinated to this kindness and compassion of God. it is true to say that all human beings stand in need of God's kindness and compassion and these will undoubtedly be given to each one at the end. If so, no one can be judge anymore over his fellow human being. The famous Biblical scholar , Joachim Jeremiah, commenting on the Parable of Laborers in the Vineyard, gives us a striking picture of God: " God is depicted as acting like an employer who has compassion for unemployed and their families. He gives to publicans and sinners a share, all undeserved, in his Kingdom. so will he deal with them on the Last Day. That, says Jesus, is what he is like; and because he is like that, so am I; since I am acting under his order and in his stead. Will you then murmur against God's goodness? That is the core of Jesus' vindication of he gospel: Look what God is like all goodness."
The core of Jesus' message of the Kingdom consists in his image of God: God loves every human being with UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Don't forget that He always loves us , forgives us, and present with us. Our Conversion means a conversion to the true image of God; it is neither a world view nor a simple idea, but it is the true vision of the Reality. For this Vision Jesus lived for, worked for, suffered for, died for. To have a true Image of God is the basis for our conversion and renewal.
