Long ago, there ruled in Persia wise and good king. He loved his people.
He wanted to know how they live, the hardship they suffered. Often he dressed
in the clothes of a working man or a begger, and went tot he homes of the
poor. No one whom he visited thought that he was their ruler.
One time visited a very poor man who lived in a cellar. He ate the
coarse good the poor man ate. He spoke cheerful, kind words to him. Then
he left. Later he visited the poor man again and disclosed his identity
by saying "I am your kind". How surprised the poor man was !.
The king thought the man would surely as for some gift or favour , but he did not. Instead he said :"you left your palace and your glory to visit me in this dark, dreary place. You ate the coarse food I ate . you brought gladness to my heart. To others you have given your rich gifts. To me you have given yourself . "
Our Lord Saviour Jesus , the king of Glory, left heaven
and became one among us to be with us.
Two thousand years ago Jesus, the Saviour came into this world, dividing
the history into two: viz., B.C and A.D. It is a reality that without referring
to this event no one can talk of history or anything in this
world. That means everyday in our lives we, knowingly or unknowingly
refer to this Great Event called Christmas. Irrespective of caste or creed,
race or continent, majority of the world give much importance to Christmas.
St.John, the Apostle speaks of this Great Event called Christmas :
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and word
was God”(Jn 1:1). “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only
Son from the Father (Jn. 1:14).” Thus, He became Emmauel, means God is
with us. The core message of the Christmas is that God is with us! He is
in the manger as one of us and one among us. Yes, Our God is with us, as
the embodiment of God's LOVE.
For a world that is afflicted with various kinds of evils: poverty, injustice, exploitation in manifold ways, wars etc., and is with fear and anxiety and has no hope of the future, Christmas assures that He, the Incarnated Word, is with it. In a situation where the experience of crushing and shattering one comes across, nothing is there in the world to keep him/her balanced or having the peace saluted by the angels. Here the relevance of Christmas is getting stronger.
“Again St. John the Apostle says: For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish
but have eternal life (Jn 3:16).”
That means one who was born at the Bethlem, was the manifestation of
God’s love.
God's Love is thoroughly unparalleled. There is nothing in the world
for its substitution. It is true to say that no one is satisfied
with the kind of love he/she receives. A crave for greater love is so strong
in every human being. That means unless and until one receives the
true love that makes one liberated, satisfied, purified, the dissatisfaction
will remain, inflicting irreparable damages upon. Christmas reminds us
that Jesus, the embodiment of the divine love has come
from above to fill us this divine love that quenches the thirst of the
world(Jn 7:37). The nature of the (divine)love is flowing and overflowing.
The only principle applicable to this love is giving. “Giving is better
than receiving.”
Jesus, the Word of God has become flesh to save and serve the humanity. True humanity is visible only in Jesus. The authentic humanity as manifested in the life of Jesus, definitely, will make the bad situation changed. The very purpose of humanity or the life of a human being is to establish a situation like of the Kingdom of God, where the only law relevant and applicable is love. further more, each one in this world as human being must change the bad situation prevalent. Oscar Romoro, the Archbishop in Latin America, who was shot dead while he was offering Mass once said : “we must search Jesus not in the colourful image of Jesus in the beautifully decorated cribs, but in the children emaciated and tired and deprived of nutritious foods.” It is crystal clear that an authentic humanity is manifested only when the bad situation dominant is transformed. Nothing short of the spirit of love, concern for the poor and service can make the undesirable situation changed. God has become Emmanuel only to make the world transformed: a better society or a New Society. Christmas make us remember the responsibility we inherited as human beings: live an authentic humanity and make this world changed according to the values of the Kingdom.
Leo Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers
the world has ever known. All his writing reflected his deep insight into
human nature. Towards the end of his life he lamented that he had not fulfilled
a thousandth part of Christ’s commandments, not because he did not want
to, but because he was unable, even though he was trying with all his heart.
He believed that Christ was the prime example for all to follow.
According to Christian tenets, living the faith is not a matter of
man striving to become better through self-effort or conforming to a collection
of divine laws. It is the irruption of Jesus Christ into the person’s life;
a new liberating force bringing deliverance from sinful nature; a new empowering
by the Spirit of God. It is this spirit which imparts to the Christian
the power to love the unlovable or to forgive the wrong-doer. The Spirit
engenders a new set of attitudes towards people and drives out the demons
of self-love. Lives are not transformed by means of regulations. The source
of all reformation of life is personal fellowship with Jesus Christ. Jesus
promises to replace the stony heart in man with a new heart.
Most of the world leaders including Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi,
vivekananda, and several others had drawn inspirtain from his teachings,
particularly the Sermon on the Mount. Of Him, Vivekanada wrote: “In
Him is embodied all that is best and greatest in his own race and He himself
is the impetus for the future, not only to His own but also to unnumbered
other races of the world. if I, as an oriental , am to worship Jesus
of Nazareth, there is only one way left to me, that is worship Him as God
and nothing else.”
In short, Christmas assures He is with us and love us unconditionally.
Just as He lived in this world unfolding the authentic humanity of love,
care, service and sacrifice, we must live the authentic humanity in the
situation where we are. Jesus is not a role model but the power to live.
Personal fellowship Jesus Christ is the is the only source of all reformation
in our life.

According to a definition given to Liturgy, it is a public worship offered
to God the Father, by the community of the faithful , as the body of Christ,
in union with the Holy Spirit symbolically re-enacting the salvation history.
The aim of the liturgy is to re-actualize the content of the faith within
the life and experience of the Church and thus reaffirm ourselves in this
faith. Liturgical year is a device aimed at this objective.
Liturgical year is the division and arrangement of the year into seasons
meant to remember the salvific events in the life of Jesus and meditate
on them so that we lead a life in its spirit and light. Thus, liturgical
year is divided into seven seasons and they are given in the following:-
1. The season of anunciation (Suboro) : it starts at the end
of October or beginning of November. In these seven weeks, a Christian
receiving the messages of the coming of the Saviour , gets himself ready
to receive Him.
2. The season of Christmas and epiphany: this period starts one week
before Christians and ends before the Great Lent begins. These two
feasts remind us that Jesus is the true light of the world. then
after two Sundays which commemorate the dead priests and the faithful and
the three day's Nineveh Fast , we enter into the season of Lent.
3. The Lenten season: Through fast, repentance and mortification,
the church unites
Herself with the passion and death of Jesus.
4. The Easter season: it starts with the Easter Sunday. In this
season, Christians
rejoice and live in the new life of glory, he received through the
resurrection of
Jesus. The name Hevoro week reminds every Christian to be pure
and clean at
heart.
5. Season of Pentacost: it falls on the 50th day after resurrection
and takes us to a period where we avail ourselves to the work of the Holy
Spirit. This is also known as Sleeha Kalam, since the Sleeha Nombu feasts
f Peter and Paul, St. Thomas Day, etc, occur during this time.
6. The feast of transfiguration(Agu.6): it takes us to the season of
glory. It signifies growth of the Church in response to the preaching of
the spirit filled Apostles . this is the shortest season of the year. It
also reminds us of the God's call to his glory.
7. The feast of the exaltation of the cross(Sept.14): it brings us
to the last season of the liturgical year. Cross is also the symbol of
the end of the world, resurrection of the dead, the last judgement, the
glorious second coming of Jesus, etc.
When we go through the liturgical year it reminds us of the whole history
of salvation and helps us to experience it. Thus, our life becomes a journey
with Jesus Christ partaking in his salvific activities.
o Christmas is a gift of love wrapped in human flesh and tied
securely with the strong promises of God.
o Christmas is angelic music in the form of Carol and oratorio
with celestial descent.
o Christmas is "Glory to God", Good News to men and women"
and "Joy to theworld."
o Christmas is 'peace on earth' for those who accept it and
live in unity with God's will.
o Christmas is a man on duty tending sheep or machine who senses
the upward call and stops to worship.
o Christmas is a ringing bell calling a distraught humanity
to gladness and hope.
o Christmas is a glowing hearth gently placed in the winter
of man's loneliness.
o Christmas is an altar to which man can bring his heartache
for comfort, his lostness for guidance, his sin for forgiveness.
o Christmas is a shining star of hope in the sky of all
mankind.
o Christmas is more than words can tell , for it is a matter
for the heart to receive , believe and understand.
