TRUE FREEDOM
The word ‘freedom’ is the most favourite one for every human being
in this world. ‘Freedom’ is such a word that every one, individually
or collectively, uses every day either to assert or to disclose the particular
state of an individual or collective being. Every history, written
or unwritten, speaks of the history of freedom. The analysis of any
human activity shows that it obviously centers on the notion of freedom.
Every happening in this world may point out the reality of the freedom.
Then, it is nothing wrong to say that ‘freedom’ is the supreme value and
without which man ceases to be human being, formed in the image and likeness
of God (Gen.1:26). Every struggle man undergoes is for getting the experience
of this supreme value. Human struggles are on, but the reality of having
the experience of the true freedom is still a matter of question. What
we see everywhere is the unrest emanating from the situation which is full
of
non-freedom.
“Truth will make you free.” Says Jesus (Jn.8:32). “I am the Truth” He says again (Jn.14:6). The fact we often forget is that the world is not able to provide us the authentic freedom for which we all struggle. What makes us authentically free is the truth – ‘Jesus’ - the truth that came down to the world. The ‘history of salvation’ invites our attention to the fact that if God has become the part of humanity through his prophets, especially his beloved Son, it is only for giving back the authentic freedom that was lost earlier. The Nazareth episode substantiate it: “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour( Lk 4:18-19).” He liberates, heals, saves, and purifies. Yes, Jesus alone is the giver of authentic freedom. The freedom we receive from Jesus is as the freedom of the Children of God (Gal.5:1.13). Always there is the standing invitation for this authentic freedom for everybody. In order to achieve the status of the children of God we must not indulge in the works of the flesh but be associated with the works of the Spirit(Gal.5). One who is filled with and guided by the Holy Spirit is having the true freedom.
Bible always underscores the value of freedom as the
crown of man’s glory. It is a gift given for him. “Freedom is one of the
most precious gifts that the heavens have bestowed on men, with its treasures
locked in the earth and hidden in the depths of the sea are not compared.”
Says Don Quixotic. Human being bestowed with the gift of freedom is entrusted
everything that created by God for appropriate use with responsibility.
He is free to eat or not to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil(Gn.2:16-17). His gift of freedom must not be misused.
“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters ; only do not use
your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence,” (Gal.5:13), says St.
Paul. Responsible use of our freedom will pave the way for
a new heaven and earth as Jesus envisioned. It has to be anticipated and
materialized here in our humble life
situations. As long as the freedom we received as gift is exercised
appropriately in the way desired, the net result is a new heaven and earth(Is.65:12).
It is our duty to get back the paradise .
To exercise one’s freedom means to live in this world, doing good
for others, even being ready to sacrifice one’s own well-being. Here
it is relevant what J.Nehru said: “Freedom demands respect for the freedom
of others.” Hence, let us have the authentic freedom
and use in the way desired and meant for.
When we celebrate the Independence-day of our country, the realities that
are happening around are not that much pleased. Even after 53 years of
independence, India is still in much confusion and chaos. The country is
drifting along shoreless sea of instability. The India which Gandhi,
Nehru, and other leaders worked hard to stabilize, to form into a
powerful democratic nation is at present getting disintegrated due
to the instability of the governments and the inaptitude of leaders.
The recent past of its political history shows ominous signs of its growing
decay. The competition for power and position has turned our leaders into
a selfish lot. As a result, the parties split, unprincipled alliances are
born, harmful policies are advocated, and pernicious slogans are raised,
all just for power. Here we need a change for better. So, new visions,
dedicated visionaries and patriotic sons are what our mother-land needs
today. Let us also raise our sincere prayers for our country with the powerful
intercession of Blessed Virgin Mary as we celebrate the feast of the Assumption
of Blessed Virgin Mary .

RELEVANCE OF MAR IVANIOS DAY
The memory of great personalities like Late Fathers of the church give
us inspiration, courage and commitment to our own call of Christian existence.
The Syrian Christians always have this traditional , patrimonial remembrance
of our forefathers, those who lived a saintly and committed Christian life
for the service of the people of God and society. In this way when we remember
our Late Archbishop Mar Ivanios we do pay our deepest homage to the departed
soul. Late H.G. Most Rev. Geevarghese Mar Ivanios was great
visionary of the Church and prophet of Church unity. He was a world
known Ecumenist, a scholar and a Church Father from the Syrian community
in Kerala. Born in Panikaruveetil family at Mavelikara, Central Travancore,
Kerala, P.T. Geevarghese was fondly called “M.A. Achan” after
his obtaining M.A.Degree as the first one among the Syrian Christian
Priests. He became a professor at Serampoor College, Calcutta, where he
was inspired by the Indian monastic traditions, which paved the way for
starting an Indigenous Monastic Order among the Syrian Christian
community which is now known as “Bethany” within Catholic and Orthodox
churches, founded by Mar Ivanios himself (Abo Geevarughese). His
contributions to the churches in India as Bishop in the Orthodox Church
includes even in the installation of the Seat of Catholicos, for which
the main brain behind was of H.G.Mar Ivanios who wanted permanent peace
and prosperity in Indian Church. As an Archbishop in the Catholic
Church, Mar Ivanios emerged as a known spiritual figure all over the world
and as an Eastern Church Father that helped him to represent India in Eucharisitic
Congress in Ireland and personal meeting with great personalities like
American President and other world leaders of that
time.
As a great scholar, eminent theologian, philosopher and life long seeker
after the light of knowledge, he spoke on Indian culture, the patrimony
of Syrian Churches in different parts of the world. In India too,
he became a Champion of education which he considered as means to liberate
people from the bondage of ignorance superstitions and illiteracy and lead
the Syrian Churches into a prosperous community in Education and Curlture.
For this purpose he established famous colleges like Mar Ivanios
College, Trivandrum to open the eyes and ears of the youth. H.G.
Mar Ivanios, a life dedicated for the entire Syrian Churches and for the
society as a whole after a period of strenuous and hectic task of organizing
the
Malankara Catholic Church passed away on 15th July,1953. For
the Malankara Catholic Church, July 15th is the Death Anniversary
of our departed Archbishop and we commemorate this day as “ Mar Ivanios
Day” every year.
