QUOTE(DQBunny @ Jan 22 2005, 05:04 PM)
There was another forum-goer who posted in the manga thread not long ago a very interesting theory as to how Inuyasha and Kagome are able to travel back and forth, but not anyone else. (forgive my rusty mind for not remembering at the moment!)

I'll just be presumptious and presume you're referring to my theory about the well being a fixed link between the two time periods and activating each time someone on either side who is 'displaced' in time jumps in. happy.gif

Here's the post in the manga thread - http://quad9dyne.ibforums.com//index.php?s...c=5989&st=1230#

Again, my disclaimer is that I was thinking of the anime canon when this idea popped into my head, so I'm not 100% sure how well it fits in with established facts in the manga canon, since 1) I always seem to remember the anime stuff better, and 2) it's really been a while since I've sat down and read through all the manga stuff again.

Note: The information that we now have about the shikon no tama being created in the Heian era may initially seem to contradict this idea, and while I once again reiterate that this is really nothing more than my own personal crackpot theory, I think it's still consistent, in the sense that up to the point that it was cremated with Kikyou, the shikon no tama progressed in normal time, i.e. it didn't jump from the Heian to the Sengoku era, like when it reappeared in the gendai period. The only problem now is that the shikon shards may not necessarily belong in the 'current' Sengoku era either, for the same reason Inuyasha doesn't belong - they were destroyed 50 years prior. The only thing I can think of here is that Inuyasha was drawn out of time because of his sealing to the tree and that's why he's 'displaced', while since the shikon shards didn't go through that process and simply reappeared 500 years later, bringing it back to the Sengoku era simply 'restored' it to its proper timeline. It's getting convoluted. laugh4.gif

Anyway, more Ougikaiden stuff soon. I see Kuro has already tackled/is tackling the shikon map thingy, so I'll channel efforts elsewhere. :3 Those stats are interesting, but I'm not sure how they work in relation to the other 'physical' stats that we've been given for the characters. It will require some study, since I haven't really looked at that section yet. :3

He's a big family man and likes working with others. Yeah, he uses them as pawns in his evil plots and randomly kills them when they're no longer useful, but it's the effort that counts. And he's all about bringing people together. (Miroku/Sango, Inuyasha/Kagome, etc) And we mustn't forget the lovebed™ biglaugh.gif

I'm actually really surprised on a lot of the figures. huh.gif

Oh, and I totally forgot to add this statistic...

TAKAHASHI
strength - 5
knowledge - 5
comraderie - 5
love - 5

... laugh4.gif (Yes, there's a stats section about her in here, too)

---

I haven't quite found an explaination that explains exactly what the Shikonzu is entailing, but I have the feeling that it has to do with spiritual strength.

We're not talking about strength for "GOOD," either. So it would stand to reason that Naraku would be that strong spiritually, but in the defiled sense. That's why he and Kikyou are head to head; that's why he's so afraid of her.

And yes, the lovebed. laugh4.gif THAT EXPLAINS IT ALL!! XDDDD

It would also explain why Sesshoumaru is so low on the scale of everything else; because his spirituality is all concerning physical strength, not love/knowledge/friendship; he doesnt' seem to exude much spirituality at all.

---

Granted, I used the English equivalents that probably don't give the entire nuance of the Shikon philosophy.

The whole idea behind the Shikon is that every person has four parts to their spirit: ai, yuu, chi, and shin. People like Miroku and Kikyou are trained to seek to strengthen and balance all four parts of their soul, which is why their strength is so strong and balanced, while people like Inuyasha, Shippou, and Sesshoumaru are very unbalanced. Naraku's spiritual strength probably doesn't come as much from being a convenient plot device training (like Miroku and Kikyou) as it does from his ability to manipulate his body and spirit and actually rearrange himself and discard weaknesses. Each character has a blurb beside their spirit, so I'll see if I can shed some light on anything there, too.

This is speculation on my part, but I think the philosophy and the numbers shown here make much more sense if I use the actual Shinto philosophy.

Aramitama - authority. Said to be yuu, the spirit of courage. Negative may be dominance.
Kushimitama - change. Said to be chi, the spirit of knowledge. Negative may be manipulation.
Nigimitama - harmony. Said to be shin, the spirit of comraderie. Negative may be loss of individuality.
Sakimitama - blessings. Said to be ai, the spirit of love. Negative may be lust and jealousy.

Plus there's more Shikon Jewel properties/history that I'll work on later.

Evil Admin® Double Post™

Aahh! Something else just caught my eye...

Did you get a chance to look at the a character appearance guide in the back of the book, Sandy? That sectionis pretty... wow. It lists the volumes where each character makes their debut appearance, and on what page. whoa.gif Holy chit. The last character that seems to be mentioned is Hakudoushi, and his appearance timeframe is given a ?? for the volume. Probably because the ougikaiden was published before volme 30 came out. *LOL*

Yuka and Eri ARE actually named in this book. Ayumi isn't named, but when I went back to the chapter they were first introduced... there she was. Looks like we were wrong about there only being two friends, all three of them are there! Although, I do have to admit, they did look a bit different than they do now.

IPB Image
The girl on the left is Yuka. The one on the right is Eri.

I think that's where the confusion came in for me. Eri looked so different, she seems like a different person. I sold my English vol. 3, so I can't go back and look at it (must place an order with Sasuga to get vol. 1-14.) I am flipping through my vol. 29 (need most of the vols. in the 30s too) and see that Eri still has her longish-haircut there too.

Now I have the insane urge to start rereading the entire series from the beginning as well - in Japanese. If that doesn't improve my Japanese skills, nothing will!

Kushimitama being the spirit of change/knowledge could explain why the most of the youkai/hanyou characters score low in that regard. They're extremely long lived and thus resistant to change.. likely even on the spiritual level.

Just my crackpot theory. happy.gif

Yup, I did notice it, since it's just after the battle record section I mentioned a few posts ago. The level of detail is quite impressive indeed, but it's going to take a while. laugh4.gif

One other section that has caught my eye is the one somewhere in the middle titled "Getting To Know Life in the Sengoku (Jidai)", with the descriptions of society, tools and equipment, methods of travel (ranging from the bicycle to the hanyou laugh4.gif) and other stuff. Fun. :3

Each character here is given a "Shikonzu" (Four-soul Diagram), where they're rated (from 0-5) regarding:

1.  Yuu - Aramitama - strength/courage --> authority/domination(?)
2.  Shi -  Kushimitama - knowledge/wisdom --> change/manipulation(?)
3.  Shin - Nigimitama - comraderie/family --> harmony/monotony (?)
4.  Ai - Sakimitama - love/compassion  --> blessings/greed(?)

INUYASHA
strength - 5
knowledge - 1
comraderie - 3
love - 4

<snip>

KOGA
strength - 5
knowledge - 1
comraderie - 2
love - 5

*coughs and spews drinks over screen*
laugh4.gif laugh4.gif laugh4.gif
That's really funny. Inuyasha and Kouga get 1s for knowledge.

I don't know if Kikyou should get a perfect score for love, I wouldn't say it was so perfect. It was like she was almost waiting for Inu-Yasha to do something wrong. Sango only got a 4 for love and a 3.5 for strength that seems a bit offish.

laugh4.gif Shippo beat out Kagome,Inu-Yasha,Kouga, and Fluffy for knowledge. Thats just priceless.

Like I said, she has some of the strongest spiritual strength in the entire series, so that rating makes perfect sense, actually. That's why she's a miko, and that's likely why she was also the person entrusted with the Shikon jewel way back when. Yes, she faltered at certain points, but as a whole, who she is by nature makes her character the most attuned to the strength and balance of her soul than anyone out of the series.

QUOTE

That also makes sense to me. Her spirit seems very much more attuned to things like knowledge, compassion, and love, than it does to being authoritative.

Yeah, he's a fast one, isn't he? wink2.gif Then again, we're talking about the hanyou who, in the movies, 1) runs over water and 2) apparently swipes volleyballs out of thin air laugh4.gif

Anyway, since that little section is mostly stats, I think I can put that info up first for now, then tuck it back into the section when I reach it later. :3

The main stats for this section are:

速さ(Speed) - how fast it/he/she is (maximum of 5)
乗り心地(Riding Comfort) - how comfortable it/he/she is to ride on (maximum of 5)
御しやすさ(Ease of Control) - the level of "driving" control the rider has (maximum of 5)

got my book out and thanks Sandrock and Kuro for the translating

I've been meaning to start an 'InuYasha First' thread, but needed to check the forum history...haven't and probably won't for a bit (effort? me?). Anyway, first osuwari (that's so obvious), first butt grab, first Kag arrow that actually hit something, etc..

And a look at how the characters first appeared and how they look currently.
That struck me the most recently with the first picture of Miroku...he's gotten better looking with time, imo. I had been looking at a Ranma tankoubon with a story including Ranma's mom. Then a day or so later while rereading IY I got to a panel with Miroku, who had just recently joined up, and my brain went ' blink.gif wow, Ranma's mom!' laugh3.gif

I'll be looking forward to that section.

The tank-dude had wheels, how do his wheels spin without breaking vital attachment tissue?

RPG characters are immune from such mundane hazards as intense heat, freezing cold, or poison gas... except when they're suddenly not. Surprise!

SQUISHINESS! laugh4.gif I'd love to ride Kirara any day. Her fur looks so fluffy wub.gif.

And I feel sorry for Sesshy-kun. 1 for intelligence? For shame, Mr. I-know-everything-about-nothing sleep.gif.

"A characteristic of today’s nerd is to be very argumentative, especially when on the internet. There’s nothing a nerd loves more than arguing over the internet. He doesn’t even have to win, he just loves the fight. Cause damn it, XxX_Sephiroth_Butt_Secks_XxX doesn’t know how to raise a Nintendog, and he needs to be told it sternly, using numbers instead of vowels."

Oh yeah, and Blayze, I am going to ask you about that toyota hanyou thing. What's with the "Toyota hanyou" thing? confused.gif

Heh, I remember that tank-man dude-thing. I always wondered if the metal-ish material on his, um, "body", was actually part of his "body". If you think about it, everthing in (or on) our body is connected by tissue, and it doesn't just come apart and seal up again. The tank-dude had wheels, how do his wheels spin without breaking vital attachment tissue?

Ok, if anyone understands what I'm trying to say... hehheh.gif

Toyota hanyou. Half human. Half car. Physically impossible. And as for the tank-dude... I'm sure there would be a way. Perhaps the wheel-related parts went through bone and through as little flesh as possible.
