Only twenty-four? They would have been bigger then, it seems. From the anime, it seemed like nearer fifty

QUOTE(HyPerrRrr KuRrroOoO @ Jan 21 2005, 12:02 PM) Naraku had 20 fragments by the time he took them back from the Shichinintai. At that point, Kohaku also had a fragment, Kouga had two fragments, and Housenki had one fragment. For a grand total of 24 fragments. Wait, wait, that can't be right. Naraku had 19 fragments, plus the big fragment Kikyou stole from Kagome,.. right? uh.. -------------------- <center>

Ah! Thanks again, Sandy!! I went ahead and started working on the Shikon no Tama section. It's not very long, but I only got through about four pages completely, and also started working on that progression tracking, but here's the start.
--- CHAPTER 4.1 P.177 Amata no youkai, miko no tamashi ga yoriatsumatta tama no koto. (Sei to jya no semegi au ayakashi no tama ni tsuite, sono tanjyou kara nouryouku made, shiriuru subete o toki akasu.) A multitude of youkai, a miko's soul, gathered togehter into a jewel. Learn all about the clash of good and evil over the magical jewel, from its birth to the realization of its powers. --- P.178 Sen-nen no aida tatakai tsuzukeru, sei to jya no ichirei A battle lasting a thousand-years, one soul of good and evil SHIKON NO TAMA - THE SHIKON JEWEL --- P.179 Kihon tokusei The Basic Qualities Shikon no tama wa miko Midoriko no tamashii to amata no youkai no tamashii ga awasatte umareta.Souhou no reiryouku to youryouku ga kyoushukusarete ori, sore yue ni te ni shita mono ni tsuyoi chikara o ataeru. Tama no naka de wa, umarete kara nagai toki o heta imanao, Midoriko to youkai-tachi wa tatakai tsuzuketeiru. Motsu mono o tamashii ni yotte shikon no tama no tokusei wa, youku mo waruku mo naru. The shikon jewel was born from a joining together of the soul of the miko named Midoriko and the souls of a multitude of youkai. Both the spiritual powers and youkai powers were condensed, giving those who held it stronger powers. During the long time that has elapsed from its birth to present events, the fight between Midoriko and the youkai continues within the jewel. Depending on the souls of those who carry the jewel, its nature becomes pure or defiled. [Nano-ka nana-ban tatakai tsuzuke, chikara tsukita Midoriko wa tamashii o ubaware sou ni naru.] [The fight lasted for seven days and seven nights. Midoriko used up her powers to so their souls could be taken.] [Midoriko wa gyaku ni youkai no tamashii o ubai, mizukara no tamashii to tomo ni taigai e to hajiki dashita.] [Midoriko reversed (the flow of) the souls of the youkai, and along with her own, forced them out of her body.] TAMA NO NAKA - ima mo arasoi tsuzuketeiru WITHIN THE JEWEL - the struggle still goes on even now. SEISHITSU - motsu hito ni yotte youku mo waruku mo naru. ITS NATURE - becomes pure or defiled depending on those who carry it. [Ooku no mochi nushi no aida de kegareta tama wa, kiyoumeru tame kikyou ni takusareta.] [The jewel was defiled while passing through the hands of many, and in order to cleanse it, was entrusted to Kikyou.] Takahashi-shihan dan - tama ga yomigareu shuuki Midoriko to youkai ga tatakatte shikon no tama ga umidasareta jiki wa, rekishi de ieba heian jidai desu ne. Sengoku jidai de ichido ushinawareta gendai de fukkatsu shite imasu kara, gohyaku-nen goto ni katsudou suru shuuki ga aru mitai desu ne. Conversation With Takahashi-shihan - The period the jewel is restored The time that Midoriko and the youkai fought and the Shikon jewel was created is, historically speaking, the Heian era. It was lost once again in the Sengoku era, and since it made its reappearance in the Modern Era, for about five hundred years it seemed there is a period of activity. ---- This is the first time I remember reading an actual stretch of time concerning Midoriko. The Heien period is historically around 794 - 1185 AD. The Sengoku period is around 1478-1603 AD. So the jewel has been around anywhere from 300 - 700 years by the Sengoku jidai. And from the blurb, it seems like it came about around 500 years before Inuyasha's time, placing its birth between 900 and 1000 AD. - EDIT - No-ryouku. Ah! THAT'S the word I was looking for! Thanks, Sandy! Yeah, I was trying to figure out what that best translated to. Kept on getting "talent" or "abilities," for nou so it was like "ability-power." Somehow, my mind just couldn't figure out a good translation for that. -------------------- ![]() Q9D Adoption Agency - OMG! New adoptees!! ![]() VOTE FOR YOUR FELLOW DYNERS IN THE 2006 Q9D AWARDS!! "Only 24 fragments?" was my reaction as well
I haven't finished looking through the whole book myself, so I've only just spotted the shikon no tama section. Thanks for translating that section, Kuro. And so... :3 We actually have a rough age for the tama now. Unfortunately, not much elaboration on what was happening to it in the interim period, unless they meant that it was stuck in the taijiya village the entire time. :3 Seems to be quite a few other interesting sections as well, including a full battle record of all the major fights fought in the manga up to the Shichinintai arc, with information on the main fighter, the opponent, each character's 'battle strength', an interesting outcome that happened because of the fight, supporting characters and stuff like that. Also seems to give a timeline (it points out when Inuyasha was in human form, when he received Tessaiga, when he learned Kaze no Kizu, when Sesshoumaru received Toukijin, when Naraku switched forms). Seems interesting enough. I plan to finish up more of Inuyasha's section (next section seems to be his various attacks...) but I might skip ahead after that and do this bit too. :3 EDIT: It seems I made an error with "Takahashi-shihan dan" - must've been tired when I looked it up, but Kuro's is more accurate. Takahashi's story, or a conversation with Takahashi makes more sense than 'decision'. Editing the earlier section accordingly :3 Also a minor error in that last section - the subject of the sentence about the one being disheartened was more likely Inuyasha's mother, not Inuyasha. Okay, I'm quite sure double-posts are frowned upon here, but I do need to draw attention to the fact that I had my translations so far checked by another of my 'sempai' from that generic anime forum, and I've made some changes accordingly. Nothing too major overall, but there are some changes and a couple of silly mistakes (like me reading 'ginpatsu'/silver hair in the book and typing 'kinpatsu'/blonde fair hair... of COURSE Inuyasha has silver hair
Sorry ^^; Many thanks to cpr34 for looking over the entire thing, when all I asked was for the last paragraph to be checked. ^^; -------------------- ![]() Magical Healing Properties! |

Eh, double posts are only frowned on when they make spam. Your posts aren't spam.
Thank you again for sharing with us!! Here's a little more translation, this one tracking the fragments. I also found more clarification on the 24 shard thing. When Naraku first comes into play, his description seems to translate into "at least four shards." So very possible there were more. Seems that for all intents and purposes, this chart only tracks "active" shards (ie. the ones that move from hand to hand), so there might have been several more shards that Naraku collected and then were katamari-ized. --- P.182-184 SHIKON NO TAMA O MEGURU NAGARE TRACKING THE PROGRESSION OF THE SHIKON JEWEL --- Heian Jidai (794-1185) *Miko Midoriko to youkai ga tatakai, shikon no tama ga umareru. *Samazama na youkai ya ningen no te o tenen to suru. Well, as long as I didn't do anything evil ^^;
That's a lot of typing too Well, I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than 24 shards in total... it certainly looked that way (well, at least anime-wise) when it shattered. wow thank you kuro!! That is certainly an accurate account of what happened. It helps to be able to keep them straight. Its interesting to note that Kagome hasn't had any shards for a while. I feel that this is proof that she doesn't need the shards to go back and forth from the well, as some people have speculated.

QUOTE but what about that episode were Inu pushs her down the well and she can't get back? That's been discussed a few times; I'm not sure if it came up at any time on this board, though. The well didn't work because Inuyasha blocked it up with a tree. The anime lines implied that Kagome couldn't travel more because of the lack of shards while the manga didn't imply anything at all, and showed that Inuyasha had stuffed a tree in the well. SHIPPOU: Eido o tsubushitara, Kagome ga kaette korenai de wa nai ka!? (If you smash the well, Kagome won't be able to come back, will she!?) Of course, the catcher was that in both cases, once the shard was back inside the well, Kagome was able to go through, despite the tree being there. Maybe the shard gave it a boost or something. -------------------- ![]() Q9D Adoption Agency - OMG! New adoptees!! ![]() VOTE FOR YOUR FELLOW DYNERS IN THE 2006 Q9D AWARDS!! When I first read/saw that particular arc, I remember thinking that Inuyasha's unconditional ability to travel through the well had something to do with the rosary (some connection with Kagome?) and Kagome could only travel back either with shards or with Inuyasha with her. Has there ever been a time where Kagome went back [to the sengoku jidai] alone and with no shards in her possession? (I'm probably forgetting something here...) But that's how I thought it worked for a long time...every other theory i've read seems to make sense too.

There was another forum-goer who posted in the manga thread not long ago a very interesting theory as to how Inuyasha and Kagome are able to travel back and forth, but not anyone else. (forgive my rusty mind for not remembering at the moment!)
The last time we see Kagome return to the Sengoku Jidai on her own is in vol. 20 at the beginning of the Tsubaki Arc. At that time, she had two shards. Which reminds me - what about when Naraku gave Tsubaki his shards? The book forgot to mention that in the timeline. Anyhow, Inuyasha is with Kagome in all the other Gendai chapters after that, so I doubt that she's even tried to return on her own. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

No, you wouldn't just burn things, your world would end and you'd attempt to take everyones world to and end with you. QUOTE(Sakura Saku Posted on Jan 22 2005 @ 12:43 PM) I also thought it had somthing to do with that they (Inu,Kago) could only get through if they both were willing to see each other. I've wondered that as well. It may be that if they are willing to see each other, they can pass through. Maybe she couldn't go back at first that one time he pushed her in the well because she was so shocked and upset that she may have been (deep down) not wanting to face him yet. But, I don't know. It's just speculation. -------------------- · Selective Invulnerability Principle

I believe that inu can time travel because he was pinned to the time tree and somehow was able to absorb some of its powers. Since the well is made from the tree he can go back and forth as he pleases. Kagome doesn't need shards to go back and forth, as she has not had any shards for a long time yet the manga JUST had a chapter with her and inu in her time. She can probably time travel because of her spiritual powers. Since she in a former life sealed inu to the tree she can also travel as much as she likes. I just wonder if when everything is resolved at the end, after she has no purpose to be inu's time anymore, if the magic will still work for her............

I just found a few more interesting tidbits in the book. If anyone remembers that episode where Kagome gets taken to the temple where the monk explains that each of her friends is represented by an aspect of the Shikon, that wasn't entirely just pulled out of the writers' asses.
Each character here is given a "Shikonzu" (Four-soul Diagram), where they're rated (from 0-5) regarding: 1. Yuu - Aramitama - strength/courage --> authority/domination(?) 2. Shi - Kushimitama - knowledge/wisdom --> change/manipulation(?) 3. Shin - Nigimitama - comraderie/family --> harmony/monotony (?) 4. Ai - Sakimitama - love/compassion --> blessings/greed(?) - EDIT- Added in a few terms regardng the Shinto philosophy and other notes. (I'll add in the little write-up as soon as I get the time to translate it.) INUYASHA strength - 5 knowledge - 1 comraderie - 3 love - 4 KAGOME strength - 3 knowledge - 3 comraderie- 5 love - 5 MIROKU strength - 4 knowledge - 5 comraderie- 5 love - 5 SANGO strength - 3.5 knowledge - 4 comraderie - 3.5 love - 4 SHIPPOU strength - 3 knowledge - 4 comraderie - 3 love - 2 KIKYOU strength - 5 knowledge - 5 comraderie - 5 love - 5 KOGA strength - 5 knowledge - 1 comraderie - 2 love - 5 SESSHOUMARU strength - 5 knowledge - 1 comraderie - 1 love - 1 NARAKU strength - 5 knowledge - 5 comraderie - 5 love - 5 --- -------------------- ![]() Q9D Adoption Agency - OMG!
