Most of the Devils dips I have heard of gained notority back in the days of horse carriages. According to the legends for these large dips in country roads a demon or even the devil himself would jump down on the riders and take them to their deaths. Nowadays some of the legends still are told by old timers through out the tri-state area. In investigating a few of theseI have found that the basis behind these normally come from an accidental death involving a horse getting tripped up going down steep hills.
