Prejudice How is it that in this day in age there is still such a hatred for people that are different than us? I read articles online about how the big politicians in Washington are debating on whether to allow gay marriages or not and whether or not its constitutional. At what point is it their choice to decide whether or not two wymyn (or men) can get married? Homosexuals have the same right to be happy as the rest of us and to have so many people against that is ludicrous. The Constitution guarantees everyone the right to life, liberty, and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. So why should this be different depending on your sexual preference?
I honestly cannot understand how people can look down on someone else just because they like the same sex. We are all humyns and we all deserve a fair shot at the best life possible so why should it matter what your sexual preference is or what color your skin is or what gender you are? Despite all the movements for equality between the races, sexes and so on, there are still so many racist, misogynistic people out there. And the worst part is that these people are in charge of our country. President Bush has publicly said he is against making gay marriages constitutional because it would hurt the *sanctity of marriage.* How can it do that?!?!?! How can letting two people who honestly love each other get married worse than letting a man marry a womyn and then abusing her the whole time they are married? Why is letting two gay people have the same benefits that straight people get when married such a big deal? Over half of marriages end in a divorce, it seems to me Mr Bush, that marriage hasnt been blessed in a long time, so how is letting two people of the same sex who care for each other get married going to ruin the sanctity of marriage?
Everyone I talk to about this says that racism is wrong and that we shouldnt judge people by their outer appearance, but since when is that form of prejudice any different than that of the prejudice against gays. Even people who think that Gays should be allowed to get married think that gays shouldnt be allowed to have children. What gives anyone the right to say that a gay couple who are willing to give all they can to care for a child is worse than having two parents who didnt want children to begin with and let the kids run around and do whatever they want because they dont care what happens to them.
The whole problem isnt just the marriage issue, but the issue that homosexuals are looked down upon in society. Yes we have popular tv shows which feature gay characters, but these figures are more caricatures than actual people. *Fag* and *Thats so gay* are commonly used in a derogatory manner in every day conversations. What makes these words better to say than *nigger* which is looked down upon in society?
The problems dont just end with homosexuals though. Even though African-Americans and many other minorities have made vast improvements in their treatment and rights over the past decades, they are still faced with prejudice. It seems like there is still a riff between the races, and African-Americans are still fraught with the stereotypes that they are all dealing drugs, shooting people, and failing school. The media does nothing to stop this image either, instead they show movies which perpetuate this stereotype.
Wymyn are still faced with prejudice in society too. Men still feel that they are the superior sex in terms of physical and mental abilities and still hold the top jobs in most companies. Wymyn are also stuck with the stereotype that they are emotional, ditzy, and dumb despite everything wymyn have struggled to prove. Ill save the rest of this paragraph for another rant because there is still a lot more I want to say on this issue but I dont really have time.
I think that despite the movements all these groups have made in order to try and find equality in the world and United States, each of them is still stuck with the problem that some people will never change and until everyone learns to be more accepting, these issues will never be resolved. I can only hope that someday these high ranking officials and politicians who govern our country will open their eyes for once and see the turmoil that our country is facing, and change some of these stupid laws and ideas so that in future generations they will never have to face the problems that these groups must face.
