Levant – a Zajal in the Orient
by Beni Müller [Switzerland]
ABSTRACT: On the East coast of the Mediterranean
the tradition of zajal lives on. Improvisational poetry – at times witty and contentious, at
times patriotic and serious – which turns our eyes toward the nature and
meaning of love. The poet Zaghlul calls himself and his troupe Doves.
With his zajals he leads us through an abundance of dissonant pictures
and moods of the Levant.
The provocativeness of my film is that it is not
directed against any particular culture, political opinion or religion. My
position is in favor of the richness ot the people in this rich part of
the world called the Levant (avoiding any particular state or border). I take
the side of peace and mutual understanding.
