HORSES, HEROES AND BROKEN HEARTS

by Dina Dahbany-Miraglia [City University of New York]

ABSTRACT: Geographically speaking compositions of classical muwashshahat are alive and well in North Africa and the Middle East. Composers and compositions elsewhere are hard to find.

This paper contains three compositions written in Judeo Yemeni and the Hebrews by an American. Each muwashshah highlights a traditional Arabic poetry theme. “Horses” and “Heroes” typify the jahaliyyah qasidah.
