Miss
Mylene De la Fuente
1999 Mutya ng Balanga

Born on the 12th of May, 1977, Mylene is third among the five children of Bernardo G. Dela Fuente, Jr. and Rosario Q. Que. She grew up in Balanga, Bataan with her sister Arlene and brothers Edwin, Marvin and Sherwin. Her inclination towards music may be traced from her grandfather, father and two uncles who were exposed to bands during their prime. Her involvement with music began early when she took part in the church choir and in school programs. She learned piano with Mrs. Banzon and Mrs. Caronan, and even had voice lessons with the latter.

Education and Career

She graduated valedictorian in 1990 at the Bataan Infant Jesus School during pre-school and elementary, and in 1994 at the Tomas del Rosario College during high school. With a diminishing interest in science, mathematics, history and the like, she decided to shift focus to the arts and found herself quite enjoying singing. She enrolled for a month at the Ryan Cayabyab Music Studio as preparation for the College of Music audition.
With two more solo recitals (out of the required four) to accomplish, she faces the challenges of a higher form of singing as she pursue a degree in Bachelor of Music in Voice (minor in piano) at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. Her professors include Katherine Molina, Ligaya Quinitio and Elmo Makil. She also had a month of voice master class with German Prof. Julius Severin, and Opera Workshops with Professors Ramon Acoymo and Johanna Cabili and directors Gamaliel Viray and Jaime del Mundo. A consistent university/college scholar, she received benefits from the Presidential Scholarship of the university from 1995 to 1999.

She ventured into other fields that caught her interest while in college. She took up Introduction to Theater (under Prof. Tony Mabesa), Stage Movement (Dr. Anton Juan) and Theater Production Methods (Prof. Amiel Leonardia). In addition, she learned Introduction to Cinema, Basic Still Photography and Film Directing with Professors Rolando Tolentino, Roehl Jamon and Jovenal Velasco respectively. And would anyone believe that she tried gymnastics at age 17 and ballet at age 22?

Because of her passion for theater, she has appeared in the opera/operetta Hansel and Gretel (directed by Zenaida Amador/Philippine Opera Company and Philippine Repertory) (during freshman, directed by Prof. Fides Cuyugan-Asensio and Cabili/UP College of Music), Binyag (Stage Movement/UP Dulaang Laboratoryo), La Verbena de la Paloma (Prof. Rogelio Juliano/UP PCCA), Candido (Paul Morales/Dulaang Talyer), La Viuda Alegre (Juliano/UP Playwrights Theater), Mga Larawan ng Himagsikan (Jonas Sebastian/UPCMu). She even tried working backstage as assistant costume personnel in the play Of Mice and Men (Meynard Pealosa/UP DL).

She has performed in student recitals too. At the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Folk Arts Theater and UP Theater, she has worked as chorus member with orchestras such as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Prof. Feliciano Francisco and the late Dean Rey Paguio (UPCMu). She also trained with the Philippine Madrigal Singers in her first year, but now joined her friends in the Coro Concertino that has won in a few competitions.
Occasionally, she writes songs, trying to finish in a sitting so as to keep her focus and inspiration. She loves to read but sometimes it keeps her from doing other things. And like any other ordinary girl, she enjoys shopping! At other times, she plays basketball, and swims. She tries a little of cooking and gardening too.
