?The Gathering band was formed in 1989 by Rutten Brothers Hans (drums) and Rene (guitar) and vocalist Bart Smits, Soon enough Frank Boeijen (keyboards), Jelmer Wiersma (guitar) and Hugo Priensen Geerligs (bass) joined the band. They began their career as a death metal band, but soon they shifted towards a more experimental, atmospheric approach. After issuing 2 demos (-An Imaginary Symphony- and -Moonlight Archer-), they released their debut album -Always- in 1992, an album which was acclaimed all over the underground scene. 2 years later they released their second album by the name of -Almost A Dance- with Niels Duffhues and Martine van Loon on vocals.
At the end of 1994, The Gathering came across a charismatic 21-year-old singer named Anneke van Giersbergen. Having singed a contract with a major label (Century Media), they released their debut album with Anneke on vocals -Mandylion- in 1995 and 2 years later they released -Nighttime Birds-.
In 1998 Jelmer decided to leave the band for personal reasons and TG decided to remain with only one guitarist (Rene). At the same year they recorded -How To Measure A Planet?-, their most experimental disc to date.
In 1998 they also decided to take the reins of their career by creating their own label "Psychonaut Records". As their contract with Century Media wasn't finished yet, they released a live album in 2000 named -Superheat- and a new studio album named -if_then_else-.
Being finally free to do emotional experimental music, they released a great mini-CD named -Black light district- on Psychonaut Records in 2002, followed a year later by the release of -Souvenirs- album, which turned out to be their last album with Hugo on the bass.
A very talented bassist, Marjolein Kooijmans, replaced Hugo in October 2003. The Gathering then set a 2004 release for a semi acoustical album -Sleepy Buildings-, followed by an extensive world tour.
2005 was a year off for the Gathering, since singer Anneke was taking time for her new born son, Finn. Not quite off however, because they arranged a single date in Amsterdam to record their live DVD -A Sound Relief- in front of 750 fans from all over the world.
Their new album -Home- is about to be released in April 2006. The album will be issued under the license of Sanctuary Records in Europe and The End Records in North America. |
