Mass Separation jumpstarts this cd with a song dedicated to tofu. This Malaysian trio plays intense grind/crustcore with powerful alternating vocals. Fast from start to finish. And if that's not enough for you then Atrocious Madness will take care of the rest. They are a Poiltical HC from Portland, U$A. Lotsa feedback, fast and screaming all throughout the end of the cd. They also have a Disorder cover song (Daliy Life). Both bands' lyrics deal with socio-political issues... 2 great bands in one cd. - SANNEE

LAST CALL FOR UNITY comp. CD
LAST CALL FOR UNITY compilation CD

Bar Code The World PO BOx 341, Five Dock, N.S.W., 2046, Australia
This compilation from Down Under came with a very neat DIY packaging, a small bag with a silkscreened design. The CD itself is pro-copied though. 34 bands playing all kinds of hc/punk, from the snotty ones to melodic/skate punk to hardcore and some grind/crusty sounding ones too. There are also some non-punk bands here with that indie sound. The most disappointing one for me is Megadrive. I thought they were an Oi band cuz of the title of their song,"Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi". It turned out they're a digital hc band. Just disappointed me that's all. Some of the bands I like are Playground of Hate, Infliction, Nihilist, Conation, Biceptasaurus, Annoia, Tubbh, Mugshot & Degrade. - SANNEE

SIXTY THREE 4-song Demo Tape/CD (recorded December 2000)

email (Alvin Santa Cruz):

As few of us may already know Sixty Three is no longer around anymore, and members of it went on to form another hardcore group named "Count to Ten". Anyways, Sixty Three is an all-Filipino hardcore/metalcore band from San Fernando Valley, California. With ex members of Skrewhedz and Badburn this band delivers all the good and intense, brutalness of heavy hardcore music with their unique style of playing which is non-compareble to any hardcore/metal bands nowadays. The demo includes four hard-hitting tracks of pure aggressive, double pounding bass pedal, bone-crushing metal riffs, amazing heavy breakdowns, and dual angry vocals. Songs like "Step Down and Never Again" will make you go nuts! Just by hearing all those blistering breakdowns and powerful guitar riffs plus all those screaming-growling vocals, men its totally insane heavy as fuck! These songs also talks about when EDSA 2 and all that crap was happening at that time, to sum it up they're basically protest to survive songs. Another favorite track is Firespark which deals more on their personal experiences and beliefs. And last of all is Good Lookin Out, dedicated to all their beloved friends in the Philippines. All in all the uniqueness, creativeness and heaviness of this demo totally blew me away! Brutal-killer-heavy hardcore! (Contact Alvin Santa Cruz to get a copy of their demo.) --- CRUSTYBUBBLES

Crust + punk + metal = Besk. I like the death metal-like sound of the first song, aptly titled 'intro.' This band hails all the way from Sweden. Their songs are mostly in swedish (except for two). Some of which were translated to english on the inlay. (If you want the complete lyrics & translations, visit their website.) Heavy music with dual screaming angry vocals. Both have that harsh voice. They have their fast & slow moments. But when they slow down, they get into this steady guitar riffs. It just keeps you going. And when they hit it fast, you can't help but get on your feet and move. Their lyrics deal with issues such as war, racism, abortion, homophobia, freedom... Their lyrical approach is kinda direct & straightforward, which really gets the message accross. I can't stop listening to this shit, it's just that good. Repression! Repression! --- SANNEE

From the Lair of the Diverse comes this mini CD where the cover art bears the underground's version of "Top o' the World". Opening the track with a killer hardcore freakout entitled 'Bertie' ( tho I really have no idea what that word meant) All songs were written in Polish language, which is the main reason why you would hear me saying 'yeah right.' After every tune, BUT! Its got a lyric info sheet which were written in english so then again, I had to undergo the simultaneous reading & listening session. The CD is a well-produced material, from cover art down to the cd graphics. It's a DIY release actually This is a collection of the band's previous releases from different labels. I would've dig this band if they would consider the fact that not all beings in this planet would understand the polish language. Nah, I ain't no critic after all --- ALBERT

SIGNAL 3 - Kingsley United
SIGNAL 3 "Kingsley United" CD

MISCREANT RECORDS

Sa wakas, after almost 3 years, the typhoon has come back! "Kingsley United", Signal 3's follow-up to 1998's "Convergence Zone," is a 9-song collection of expressed feelings & emotions, beliefs & idelology. Its about time!!!! This album takes you on a musical journey from punk rock to oi to ska to oi again...puro oi!The album gives you the boot with the title track, "Kingsley United," probably the band's personal theme song. "Kapit Kamay" is a straightforward Tagalog punk rock song that despite thousands of miles away, SN3 sends out the message of support & tackles the issues of the everyday hardships of laborers in the motherland. Appropriate song for Labor Day protests (not that I promote it ok..heheh - lsd). Make sure to check out one of the coolest "Lupang Hinirang" riffs ever recorded! "Power and Glory" is more of a Pinoy-centric thing yet it makes us realize that no matter what race/color we are, we got to be proud & down with it! In this case, "Pinoy Pride" till death! Patriotically-correct, this is definitely a classic Pinoi Oi anthem. The struggle continues with "Working Class" & "Runnin' with the Boys" but the boot stompin' doesn't stop here. "Ginto o Tanso" is one of my favorite tracks. It's their take on ska-punk which starts off with a classic rocksteady beat & goes on rockin' the way you'd sweat it skankin with the rudies in a pit! The sometimes off-key vocals is just simply great. This is Signal 3's "who cares-I want it this way" attitude in recording. Punk rockers will surely dig "Just Like You" & "Gun Control." The latter is classic old school hardcore...fast & furious! Great message (though it's so fast I couldn't even understand it..heheheh). The last track is a re-recording of their classic, "Spirit of Rebellion" which reveals a more melodic version yet the intensity is kept intact it's still "radio-unfriendly." Though the album somehow marks their not-so departure from their thrash/speed roots, SN3 music here is still defined by raw, intense & angst-filled socio-political chaos. This is Signal 3 in a musically-matured stage. The entire album is very good except for the fact that it only boasts 9 cuts! Bitin!!! That's it in 3 years?!!! Dang! Put away the booze & write more songs damn it!!!..heheheh! But then again, as long as they remind us to "raise our fists for the red, white & blue...and raise our voices for the sun & stars," that's fine with me. Itaguyod Lokalpin-Oi power! --- SCHIZO

19 minutes of solid pop punk tunes which reminds me a lot of The Queers and The Ramones. Three-piece dressed like the early Ramones - leather jacket-jeans-button pins. Three-chord songs plus chorus! Lyrics associated with girls and such silly things like it. Another Stardumb Records release and I think this CD is also released on a 10-inch vinyl. --- DANE

The cover of this CD struck my attention. It's actually a picture of a riot punk girl with blood all over her tits. Yeah erotic? I don't think so punk! Old school punk rock tune that's on the street they sound heavy to me maybe because of the loud guitars all over the songs and some low tuned scream on vocals. Fast punk rock all throughout and some sort of a youth crew going on the background on some lines of their songs. I think these guys are also in line with hardcore punk stuff well think you better check it out and hear it yourself. --- DANE

Another D.I.Y. release outta Hong Kong, the violent Kung Fu film capital of the world. These are 4 kids who hang around and decided to play this shit that was SpazzCore (the thin line between hardcore & crust). The CD has got 9 tracks wherein the 2 are just fillers called 'guitar duel' (which I find funny & annoying at the same time). Its got a black & white cover and its got copyright (Yeah Right!). Taking DIY culture into yet another level. --- ALBERT
