Mario Gabriel Arce has finally arrived! Mario made his grand entrance on Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at 2:09 PM- the day before he was scheduled for his induction. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 19 1/2 inches long. Labor started at about 4:30 in the morning and we arrived at the hospital at about 7:00 AM. My water was broken by the doctor and Pitocin was administered at around noon. When my water was broken, they found meconium (baby's first poops) in it but didn't tell us anything. He had fetal distress when pushing started but all was well. A couple other problems included transitional murmurs which are no longer audible, slight jaundice, and he's "tongue-tied" making breastfeeding difficult.
The Pregnancy
It was my throwing up in my car on a Sunday after leaving Jay at work that prompted my going to the doctor. That is when we found out about Boo. My first trimester was not as rough as I have heard others to have been. I was queasy often, but I think the number of times I actually couldn't control it were around ten. I was really very tired at first. I did a lot better but still appreciated occasional naps. One food has defintely come through as being my comfort food and that is donuts. When we found out Boo's hearing is fully developed we began to read, sing, and talk to Boo.  I had been feeling Boo move since I was about 19 weeks. Boo got a lot stronger and when it got uncomfortable (like when I lay on my back) it went into a crazy kickfest. Towards the end, Boo stopped kicking a lot and begun to roll around. I had some severe cramping at 19 weeks that sent me to the doctor where I got an amazing look at Boo. Our most in-depth ultrasound was April 15. We got to see Boo's heart very well defined with all four chambers pumping at a rate of 153bpm. We saw Boo's little hands and feet and it's long legs and cute butt. We also saw it's long perfectly formed spine, its belly, its ribs, head and brain. We got a brief glimpse of Boo's face as it was being uncooperative and likes laying down facing my back with its head pressed against my bladder. The technician made Jay, my grandmother, and me face the wall while she checked to make sure everything was in order. She took a picture that revealed what Boo's sex was and placed it in a sealed envelope for me. The envelope sat in my room untouched until after Boo was born. Another thing I experienced was extreme pain in my rear pelvic area on the left. The pain was really bad making walking and standing extremely difficult to manage. That went away after a week and after I took some antibiotics my doctor had recommended to me. We've also discovered how contagious pregnancy can be as we have had two sets of friends find out they were expecting within weeks of our visiting with them! On May 8 I had my glucose screening and my appointment was with Dr. De Leon. Since he is a friend of the family and my mom went with me, he took us to the ultrasound room for another peek of Boo! Boo was so big it was astonishing. He had his legs crossed so even though my mom wanted to, we got no peek of his sex. I had another ultrasound towards the end of the pergnancy and Boo's facial features were so clear- especially his gorgeous bembas. As I was heading towards my due date with no signs of progressing past 1 cm dilation and 90% effacement, Dr. De Leon scheduled an induction for August 13, 2003 at 7:00 AM. He also made a final appointment for August 12, 2003 at 1:45. We made that appointment at the hospital!!

Life With Mario
Today, Mario is officially a week old. It was also our first visit to the pediatrician's office. Mario is doing wonderfully. He is a beautiful baby with an amazing personality. He truly is mesmerizing. The doctor we saw today was completely fascinated with him. She commented on the fact he really seems to only cry when something is truly bothering him and even knows how to soothe himself by finding his thumb and placing it in his mouth. She said it's great he can do this and we should delay the use of a pacifier because he can do this. She also has restricted Mario from going to any parties or gatherings for six weeks. He needs to be away from us germ carriers as much as possible. Also, visitors are to be severely limited to no more than two or three at a time. With a large family and lots of friends this is not an easy one for us to follow but we have got to do it for the baby's sake. He is eating around every three hours- give or take. Tomorrow, Jay returns to work and it's my first day alone with him. Breastfeeding is becoming likely as we have been using a nipple shield to help him make the transition from the bottle he was forced to use while in the incubator in the hospital, to the breast. It has frustrating moments but tomorrow we have a follow up visit with the lactation consultant to see if we can get him fully on the breast. Wish us luck. Photo updates are coming soon.
Mario's Pictures
Until I am able to scan pictures, this site has some pictures of Mario.
For now, this only has pre-pregnancy photos.
