My Way.
The night was January 22nd. It was a cold and snowy Wednesday and
when I left my house I was already five minutes late for church. I
took my Tree63 Cd out and inserted a mixed Cd with a little bit of
everything on it. I'm a classics type of guy, Track 1 Sammy Davis
Jr. singing the original "Ocean's 11" theme. Track 2:
Frank Sinatra singing "My Way" as I travel
ever-so-cautiously over the frosted semi-city road I sing with
Frank:
And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I'll say it clear;
I'll state my case of which I'm certain.
I've lived a life that's full -
I've traveled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
I never strive to do things my way honestly, mostly because I'm not
entirely sure what my way is. This song only appealed to me because,
well, hey it's Sinatra! Anyway, I come upon the only curve in the
road and I am being careful: I've only known two people my age to die and
both of them did on slick roads. Second verse comes around:
Regrets? I've had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.
I start to ease into the curve slowly turning my wheel, and I can feel
my front-wheel-drive tires turning underneath me, but my car still goes
straight. No big deal, this has happened before, I just pump the
brakes. . .but to no avail. My car gently slides off the road and
over road sign informing me that I was supposed to turn. My car
continues to pick up pace as Frank croons:
I planned each charted course -
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
My left mirror is knocked off by a large tree on my. . .err. . .left
and I continue to accelerate down the hill of one of the more affluent
subdivisions in my town. 500 feet in front of my car at the bottom
of the steep hill I see a large house, luckily God placed a large pine
tree between me and the house so that stopped me before I hit the home of
a doctor. . .or worse, a lawyer. I come to a complete stop, shaking,
but Frank continues completely oblivious to what just happened to us:
For what is a man? What has he got?
If not himself - Then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels.
Let the record show I took the blows
And did it my way.
I turned the song off, terrified, and got out of my car, still on a
sharp incline, on top of a pine tree, above a house. I called my
mom, called my dad, called a tow-truck, called the police, and got back in
my car. I changed Cd's back to Tree63.
I love You Lord
I worship You Lord, always
So thankful Lord - You saved my life
You saved my life today
That seemed a bit better.
Although I'm not entirely sure how much of this wreck had to do with Frank
Sinatra I'll blame him for now. See, whenever we take our eyes off
of God we're sure to fall, sometimes He puts trees in our way to stop us
before we do severe damage and sometimes we're already going too fast for
that to matter. Even then though, it's never too late to give God
the glory. I wasn't hurt, my car wasn't too badly damaged, and the
falling snow looked really neat against the flashing police lights.
So there was a good ending to an alright story. The moral?
Don't wait until you're sliding out of
control towards a Lawyer's house, just follow the signs before you plow
over them!
