Activity/Instruction:

• Make a list on the chalkboard of ways that germs can be transmitted
• Ask students, “Why should we wash our hands? When should we do it?”
• List the following steps as the proper way to wash hands:

2.Nickel size amount of soap

3.Thoroughly spread and lather soap onto both hands

4.Rinse hand completely under warm water for approx. one minute

·As a group, have the students pretend to wash their hands

·Have each student trace his/her hands on a piece of construction paper and cut them out

·Each student will write on the cut outs, ‘I know how to wash my hands!’

·Display the “hands” in the classroom

Standards:

• (McRel 2) Knows environmental and external factors that affect individual and community health
• (McRel 7) Knows how to maintain and promote personal health
• ILS 2, 3, 6

Materials Needed:

• 1 – 8x10 piece of construction paper per student
• Crayons
• A pair of scissors for each student

After this lesson, students will be able to:

• List ways that germs are transmitted
• Demonstrate the proper way to wash their hands
• Trace and cut out copies of their hands
