| After the gas shortage of the seventies ford felt the mustang needed a renewal. For 1979 the mustang got a ground up facelift. What better way to promote the new car than to get it in to pace the Indy 500. So as in 1964 the mustang was named official pace car of the race. The Mustang also paced the Indy 500 agian in model year 1994. | |||||||||||||||||
| And of course if there is a pace car there will be replicas, ford made 10,478 for 1979. They were all painted pewter and charcoal and recieved the pace car's orange and red stripe job along with the fading galloping ponies. Inside they received checkered recaros a console and brushed "black aluminum dash." All replicas had sunroofs instead of the actual pace car's t-tops. These replicas could be had with the new turbo 4 in stick only or in the 5.0L V-8 with an automatic or stick. | |||||||||||||||||
