Before I begin, I would like to send my thoughts, concerns, and prayers to the familes, friends, and crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Hearing the news of the shuttle breaking apart just brought sorrow to my heart, as I can fully remember the day the Challenger exploded 17 years ago. America and the World mourns the loss of the crew of 7 of the Space Shuttle Columbia. You are heroes.
After a couple of days looking for a copy of the hot, new, WWE RAW Magazine, I finally came across a copy. The reason I was so intent on reading it is, of course, due to the article written about and strictly by Stone Cold Steve Austin. This interests me for many reasons, but the main reason is to find out what Steve Austin was thinking before and since he walked out. I've been a fan of Austin since he was "Stunning", (before many fans jumped on the bandwagon). So, his walkout puzzled many fans and me. In the August 2002 issue of RAW Magazine, the WWE reported on why Austin left the company. Those involved in the story included the Chairman, Vince McMahon, and Austin's close friend Jim Ross. Both men were supposedly stunned (no pun intended) at Austins actions. Ross, who had reported many times that he and Austin were friends, seemed bitter and let down, not to mention pissed. And for obvious reasons...one of the biggest superstars in the business just up and leaves. So, that article, coupled with an exclusive airing of WWE Confidential seemed to give the fans the story of why Austin walked out on the WWE and the fans. Until now, that's all we've had as a reason.
With the new issue of RAW Magazine, we get what we have wanted to hear...Austins side of the story. Now, some of you may be thinking, "Who cares" or "I hate Austin", but if you read the WWE article on him, this one should also be given consideration. I've read some articles online that bash Austin for leaving, and that just allowing him back in the WWE with an invitation is absurd. The fact that he also had a very publicized altercation with his wife just days after his walkout helped solidify much hatred towards Austin. Obviously, Austin has had personal problems that were made public. In no way do I condone any violence towards women or walking out of a job. But, since these problems are of his doing, he has had to answer to them. From reading his article, he has patched things up with Vince McMahon. Also he and Debra are now separated and seeking divorce. So, now it seems that he will be returning to the WWE, where he can patch things up with the wrestling fans also. Everyone makes mistakes in life, and I believe people should be given second chances. I have always enjoyed Austin's in-ring ability, mic skills, and appeal. So, I am looking forward to his return.
In the article, Austin goes back in time to Wrestlemania X7 as the beginning of the end. And throughout he brings up how the creative team seemingly tore his established character apart. From how he was treated after his return from major neck surgery, versus how Triple H was treated as a God after his return. He didn't like the build-up of his match at Wrestlemania X8 against Scott Hall. He felt Hall was a little green, and that he could have had a better match with someone else. What many don't realize is that Austin had much control over his character back in the "Attitude" era, but since he came back from his neck injury things have changed. He feels that the wrestlers should have some say and control over their character. I agree to some degree that the performers should be allowed input sometimes....maybe not all the time...eh, like Triple H. But, established stars that have proved themselves in the past could help the current weak WWE product by having some control. I mean really, they've tried everything else to bring ratings up, so how could it hurt? Speaking of higher ratings...bringing Austin back will increase ratings. Austin will get people watching again, maybe not everyone, but it will be interesting. Austin doesn't guarantee anything with his return, but he is in great shape. The article also makes mention to Austin's workout and diet program that he's been on. It seems he's gained pounds and muscle and lost fat. He looks better than ever in the pics, but how well will he perform in the ring with that much time off? Time will tell.
I really enjoyed the article myself, and I would suggest anyone at all interested in Austin to also read it. I am going to reread the WWE's view and Austin's view to see if any similarities come up. Ever since last June, I've questioned if this whole thing was just a "work". It may be, it may not be. I look forward to seeing Austin return. Well that's it for now. Keep checking back in to see what's on the Round Table for discussion. Thanks for reading. |
