| News & Views # 15 - Lesnar, Goldberg, & Shelton Benjamin | |||||
| - Welcome back to another edition of the News & Views column here at the Round Table. I have wanted to share my thoughts on the recent events surrounding the moves the WWE have been making. Finally, I have a chance to put those thoughts into words. As you probably know, many changes have been made within the WWE since Wrestlemania XX. Goldberg and Brock Lesnar have left to pursue other interests, and the WWE Draft Lottery last week saw some major changes within the company. So, are these events going to be good for the WWE? Well, I suppose time will tell, but I feel that shaking things up is a plus for this struggling company. Wrestlemania: Brock Lesnar & Goldberg - Wrestlemania XX has been stamped as the greatest WM of all time. Why? I watched the show, and felt it was a strong program for any other PPV that the WWE would present. As far as a Wrestlemania, it was sub-par at best. There were no major happenings other than Benoit winning the World Title. No live music performances.no special appearances by any new or former wrestlers.no surprises. I was disappointed at the performance of the Goldberg/Lesnar encounter the most. I felt it could have been as big as Hogan/Rock at WM 18. I was laughing as both these big men were getting booed out of MSG. Goldberg can make it away from the WWE, as he has made several appearances in Japan, and is scheduled for more shows overseas later this year. However, with Brock Lesnar pursuing a career in the NFL, things do not look so solid. He cannot expect to just waltz onto the field and impress the coaches with his physique. The NFL looks at talent and ability, which Lesnar may have, but I cannot imagine that he will be offered a position just based on his size and name. There are plenty of guys in the NFL who are bigger and more talented than Lesnar. I feel that Lesnar was one of the best workers the WWE had, and his talent will be missed. I am glad that he is gone, due to his horrible attitude towards the wrestling business. I do not feel like he will be welcomed back by the fans, if the WWE ever brings him back, once his NFL career attempt is squashed. - Lets switch gears to the Goldberg situation. We all knew that Goldberg was probably leaving after WM XX. He only signed a 1 year deal with WWE last year, and his attitude towards the business has never been that of great respect. Who can blame him for not changing that attitude since the WWE did not really know what to do with him? As I said earlier, Goldberg does not need the WWE to succeed as he as proven this fact since the demise of WCW. On the same note, the WWE does not need Goldberg to succeed either. The past 2 RAW episodes drew a 4.3 & a 4.5 rating, which are stronger numbers than the WWE ever saw with Goldberg on the roster. Really, there is no harm done with his departure. This will hopefully open doors to the younger talent that the WWE already has. Shelton Benjamins Win - Speaking of the younger talent, how about Shelton Benjamins win over Triple H this past Monday? I have liked this guy ever since he stepped into the WWE, and it finally looks as if he will be used in a positive way. Of course, one has to wonder if Triple Hs sudden clean losses are a sign that he will regain the title at Backlash? A little good behavior, by jobbing cleanly, goes a long way for ol Trips. But, I must say that I am very impressed with his work as of late. Benjamin looked great in his match Monday, and showed that he can hang with the big dogs. I feel he will be a huge benefit to the RAW roster as a pure wrestler, and now a babyface. Heres hoping that a singles title run is in Benjamins near future. - Well, thats going do it for this edition. I hope you all have a great weekend, and please keep checking back for your WWE fix.
