The Great Lakes Region page
link will take you to the heart of America.
The Midwest is America, that prototypical vision of neat farmland, affluent suburbs, and compact, skyscrapered downtowns strung together along purposefully straight silver highways. Sauk Centre, Minnesota was the setting for Sinclair Lewis's Main Street; Muncie, Indiana was the subject of the sociological study called Middletown USA. It is no accident that stand-up comedians use midwestern town names- Peoria, Sheboygan, Kokomo, Kalamazoo- to mean "the heart of the country." Transplanted midwesterners spend the rest of their lives longing for broad, clear horizons;thick, shady strands of beech and maple trees; and hazy summer afternoons when kids sell lemonade from sidewalk stands. People seem genuinely friendlier and more down-to-earth here.
