1989 was a year of transition. It was my first full year of
adulthood. I learned how to drive and obtained my drivers license that year. George Bush was
president and the Berlin Wall fell. Also, I graduated from high school in June.
It was a year of change in many ways. That included a change in
travel plans. We decided to head northeast for the first time. There was great expectations,
and we were not let down. We went to New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. We also
crossed the border and invaded Canada!
First we went to Ohio. We drove through Cincinnati and Cleveland.
About 45 miles south of Cleveland we visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
Mom seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. Next, we stopped in Aurora, Ohio and enjoyed an
afternoon at Sea World. The killer whales were awesome.
From Cleveland we drove to Buffalo, N.Y. I noticed that people
talk different there. From Buffalo it's a short drive across the border to Niagra Falls.
The beauty and power of the falls is extraordinary. After catching our breath in Canada, we
headed south into West Virginia. We stopped in Charleston and played tennis at night.
The next day we entered the city of Pittsburgh in western
Pennsylvania. We met a nice lady there who gave us a ride. The highlight was a baseball game
at Three Rivers Stadium. The Cubs beat the hometown Pirates 1-0 in 11 innings. It was
Buck Nite at the ballpark. We payed one dollar each!
Somewhere in Pennsylvania mom ran a stop sign and we were pulled
over by the police. She said she didn't notice the stop sign. She did manage to get us home
without incident afterwards.
