In the sweltering summer of 1988 we hit the Atlantic Coast. We
explored South Carolina, Georgia and northeastern Florida. We visited many historical places.
In South Carolina we made stops in Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
Charleston is a quiet and friendly town with many historical
landmarks dating back to the Civil War. Myrtle Beach is a scenic resort town next to the
Atlantic Ocean. We found another Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum there. Those places are
fascinating! I remember that we also played tennis. South Carolina has a lot of big scary
bridges and we had to cross them. Yikes!
From South Carolina we drove along the coast to Georgia. Our big
stop there was Savannah. It is another southern city steeped in tradition. It is famous for
its cobblestone streets. We also saw some paddlewheel boats there. We stopped on some beach
in Georgia but I forgot the name.
We continued south into Florida. We went along the shore from
Jacksonville to Daytona Beach. We stopped in Saint Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in
America. That's where the Fountain of Youth is. When we visited Daytona we had to walk
on the beach. We also took a terrifying sky ride on the beach pier. I was sorry I got in half
way up, but obviously I lived to talk about it.
On the way back home we visited Stone Mountain Georgia.
The big mountain has a carving depicting confederate soldiers on horses on one side of it. We
walked all the way to the top of the mountain. In addition to climbing the mountain, we rode
a little train and strolled through a wildlife park.
