An Amazing Day - June 28th, 2003

At the end of our first week in Poland, Uncle Bob and I shared an amazing day!

Early in the morning, while the rest of the group headed to the Pienny Mountains for a river raft ride in the Dunajec Georg, we set off with Halina and Paul to the reginal registrar's office. This is where we hoped to find the records of the marriages, births and deaths for our family's villiages.

After driving for a couple of hours we came to a small, bustling it's outskirts was a formidable bunker-like building with a guardhouse out front. A reminder of Poland's recent Communist days! Inside, everything was dark and gloomy. We climbed the stairs to the office with much anticipation.

To my suprise we were given serveral very old, grey bound books. This was much better than I was expecting! Now, I thought, will there be anything about us? Well, everything was there! In Latin and Polish, the Rissian orthodox priests had recorded the births of Grandma and Grandpa and their brothers and sisters. Also, the marriages and house numbers for us to try and trace. Really wonderful and moving! I felt very privileged. What an amazing day!
