Introduction to Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic Touch (TT) is a
contemporary interpretation of several ancient healing practices, is a
consciously directed process of energy exchange during which the
Practitioner uses the hands as a focus for facilitating healing. This
technique was first brought to our attention as a modern healing
method by Dolores Krieger, Ph.D., R.N. and colleague the late Dora
Kunz, in the early 1970's.
Now, with a base of solid and continuing research, Therapeutic Touch
is being
taught and practiced throughout the
world. It is taught at numerous universities and colleges in the
United States and Canada and is being accepted as a nursing
intervention in an increasing number of hospitals in Ontario
The
Therapeutic Touch Network (Ontario) became Incorporated in 1994 as a
non-profit organization.
Funds are raised through members' fees,
fund raising activities and donations. |

Common Effects of TT
Innumerable dissertations and master
theses have been done on Therapeutic Touch. In early 1994, TT was one
of the recipients of research grants awarded to alternative therapies
by the U.S. National Institute of Health. Research and experience have
shown its effectiveness in:
- Promotion of relaxation and
reduction of anxiety
- Changing the patient's perception
of pain
- Facilitating the body's natural
restorative processes.
Note : Therapeutic Touch is a process
that is always individualized and usually does not exceed 20 minutes.
New-borns, the elderly/debilitated, the very ill, pregnant women and
psychiatric disorders are more sensitive to the interaction. |
