had set up a date with Antonio that evening. She then called Tommy and
asked him to watch the kids but Tommy said he was busy that evening. When
she hung up the phone, she got her gun that her father had given her years
before for protection and shot both her children. Immediately after,
Leslie called Antonio and told him what she had just done. Antonio drove
over and called 911. Leslie was in shock. Although Leslie admitted killing
her children to police she says she still didn't realize the gravity of
her actions. Leslie was charged with two counts of murder. Although the
defense argued that Leslie killed her children in a moment of insanity
while she was involuntarily intoxicated on anti-depressants, alcohol and

first-degree murder and is serving two consecutive life sentences. Deana Fairchild - July 21, 1996, Joe and Deana were drinking all day. They had gone with Matthew to buy hay for Joe’s farm animals. Matthew started dozing off as he watched TV and suddenly he heard an explosion and ran towards the house. The house was on fire and Joe and his parents died in the fire. Investigators discovered the fire had been started by gasoline. They also discovered blisters on Deana which indicated they were the result of a fire accelerant. The police also interviewed Matthew who, according to the prosecution, had been coached by his mother to come up with a story but then he broke down and told the police how his mother started the fire. Deana claimed she was innocent but was charged with arson and three counts of murder. At her trial she was found guilty and was sentenced to serve three consecutive life sentences. She still maintains she is innocent. #111. 5/27/08 |
| Rita Nitz - May of 1987, Michael Miley’s twin
brother Mark was parked at the lake when Richard and two friends attacked
people in their cars with baseball bats, breaking headlights and windows.
In the meantime, Rita claims, Richard was becoming abusive at home, and in
January, 1988 the couple separated, with Richard moving out and Rita
having custody of her 12 year old son. She invited her friend, Betty Boyer
to move in with her. In March, Rita bought a gun, which she claims was
protection from Richard but authorities believe that the couple had
reconciled by then, and that Rita was actually with Richard when the gun
was purchased. According to Rita’s roommate, Betty Boyer, on April 6th,
Michael Miley came up to the Nitz’s house and began arguing with Rita
and Richard, with Richard threatening to kill him if he didn’t get off
his property. When Miley turned around, Richard allegedly hit him with a
baseball bat several times, while Rita watched. When Miley was dead, Rita
allegedly helped Richard get Miley into the trunk of Miley’s car. Rita
adamantly denies Betty’s version of the murder. Police were able to
positively link Richard to the murder when a clerk at a mall was able to
identify Richard as using Miley’s credit cards after his death. When
police questioned Rita, she claimed that she did not know the credit cards
belonged to the murder victim. The police found additional evidence
linking the Nitz’s to Miley, and the couple was arrested in May 1988. In
September of 1988, Richard was convicted of first-degree murder and was
sentenced to death. In September 1989, Rita was found guilty and was
sentenced to life in prison. She and Richard since divorced and she
changed her name back to Brookmyer. She maintains her innocence. Chanel Boyd - February 17th, 1998. Chanel claims Jermaine slammed the baby against the wall to stop her from crying but that would not be what she would tell police. Chontella was rushed to the hospital where she was put on life support. There was evidence of head trauma and police questioned both Chanel and Jermaine. Jermaine, when questioned separately, claimed that he had come home late the night before, and when he awoke, Chanel said that the baby was on the floor and had trouble breathing. The police released Chanel to her family’s custody, asking her family to convince her to tell the truth. The next day Chanel phoned detectives and said she was ready to talk. She confessed to throwing Chontella against a wall on Valentine’s Day. Police believe on February 17th, Chanel realized Chontella wasn’t breathing and finally called 911. Armed with Chanel’s confession, the police questioned Jermaine again who confirmed the abuse. On February 19th, two days after she was brought to the hospital, baby Chontella died and Chanel and Jermaine were charged with first-degree murder. #112. 6/3/08 |
