In Australia in 1985, Peter Furler, George Perdakis and John James founded a Christian garage band called "The News."
Phil Yates and Sean Taylor joined. They played for church, parties, in bars, and wherever else they could. One of their
first gigs was playing at Peter's sister's 16th birthday party. They were soon discovered by Wes Campbell who brought them
to America.
George Perdakis left the band before they released their first album "Read All About It" in 1988 with Star Song.
Now under the name "The Newsboys" lead singer John James, drummer Peter Furler, guitarist Phil Yates and bassist Sean
Taylor were on their way to stardom. Phil Yates left the band and Jonathan Geange became the new guitarist.
In 1990, Peter Furler married Summer Lefevre, daughter of Christian music artist Mylon Lefevre. In the same year the 'Boys released their
second album "Hell is for Wimps."
Jonathan Geange left the band and was replaced by Vernon Bishop, the first American Newsboy. Up until now, the Newsboys had
never had a keyboardist. Now Cory "Ratboy" Pryor joined as the Newsboys keyboardist.
In 1991, "Boys will be Boyz" was released. The Newsboys also released a video entitled "Boys will be Boyz." Vernon Bishop
left the band, leaving the Newsboys without a guitarist.
In 1992 "Not Ashamed" was released. Dave Perkins (not part of the
band) played guitars for "Not Ashamed." This album was a huge leap forward for the Newsboys because the song "I'm Not
Ashamed" was a huge hit. This song is still a favorite among Newsboys fans. The video "Not Ashamed" was also released.
Sean Taylor and Corey Pryor left the band.
Duncan Phillips (whom Peter had been friends with back in Queensland)
joined the Newsboys as the new keyboardist. Jody Davis joined as the new guitarist and Kevin Mills became the new bassist.
Peter Furler and Jeff Frankenstein met and Peter asked Jeff to go on tour with them. Jeff ended up joining the Newsboys as
their keyboardist. Duncan became a drummer along with Peter. Jeff joined in 1994, just before the Newsboys next album
"Going Public" was released. Jeff joined too late to get his picture in the album, but he is mentioned in the insert.
"Going Public" includes the Newsboy's biggest hit "Shine."
Shortly after the release of "Going Public," Kevin Mills left the band. Peter Furler asked Phil Joel, guitarist in the
New Zealand band "Drinkwater" to be the Newsboys new bassist. Phil said yes and joined the band in 1994. He married Heather
on February 10, 1995
In 1996, the Newsboys released theirsixth album "Take me to Your Leader." This album was a huge success and includes the
Newsboys second biggest hit "Breakfast."
In 1997, the Newsboys made a movie (directed by Steve Taylor) called "Down Under the Big Top." Shortly after this, Duncan
Phillips married Breeon Wood on May 31, 1997.
After the Take me to Your Leader tour, John James left the band and moved back to Australia to spend more time with his
family. Peter became the lead singer and Duncan became the full time drummer.
In 1998 the Newsboys released "Step up to the Microphone." A year later, in 1999 they released their 8th album,
"LoveLibertyDisco." In 2000, the Newsboys released "Shine... the hits" their greatest hits album.
