| At this point, I was informed that the power to the station would be shut off at 4am for approximately 8 hours. I did what anyone in my shoes would have done...play a half hour long live tape of the legendary Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs! Many is the monday in the early eighties when I would climb down into the black beautiful dingyness of the Cathay De Grande. In the dark basement room with a low ceiling of acoustical tile, I would experience my own special version of pure rock and roll nirvana. On "Blue Monday", Top Jimmy and the band would present the personal history of cool music in an evening of drunken crazed rockbluescountrywhatever...and it was presented by probably the ugliest damn band in the world, 'ceptin' of course the genial drunken charming son of a bithch slob hisself, Top Jimmy. A handsome dirty blonde guy to be sure, even when with a big fat sweaty gut and scruffy beard with no attempt to groom it. That bastard could sing...not in some pretty foo foo way of singing , but in a full-throated yet snakey rock and roll roar...He was the epitieme of the unrock and roll purity...he sang because he could. And he did it well because in felt PURE. Fat, Sweaty, Even Scruffier Beard than Jimmy, String Strangler Carlos Guitarlos pulled out amazing stacatto runs on his battered strat (I think), and a rat-faced bastard named Dig the Pig held down the rhythm guitar duties...Fat Fat Gil T was the massive bass player, and Steve Berlin truly wailed on the sax. Various people would drum for the Pigs, with Bill Bateman and Dave Drive (of The Gears) being cats I saw pretty frequently. They would play pretty much the same set every Monday, mostly covers with an original here and there. "Working Man Blues", "44 Blues", "Who Do You Love", "Do The Do"...all played with an encredible energy that only fat sweaty garage rock and rollers playing with an attitude of we got nothing to lose and we're not going to make a living at these, lest just play because we LOVE THIS FUCKING MUSIC! That was in the early eighties, and I've missed the band for twenty years now. They did put out an album, and while it was light years beyond most records, it just wasn't the live show that I remember. Did I imagine such a great band, or were they really as good as I thought? Last week I found a live recording of the Pigs performing in San Francisco...and listening to it, I was right back in that dirty basement club pounding a bottle of Miller Highlife on the table in time with the BEAT. For everyone's New Year's Eve Party, I had to share the tape, so I played the whole half hour tape...and then I played it over again til the power went out. |
