dear friend

there was once a time when i knew
all the correct moves,
the required responses.
i could   with little effort   strike the poses
hold steady an hour as you greedily
snapped photos of my face
and still have energy for 3 a.m. discussions

funny, how quickly we got swept up
in the stories we spun
reality is the biggest problem, isn't it?

now i think, we're better off
my back, sore and stiff from forcing posture
can finally relax
my whole form takes on new shapes
and i free myself with a satisfying breath

so, my friend, in closing,
i'm forgetting what you saw in me
and my memory will erase how
easily i lost footing,
how quickly my balance failed
when your smile sent me spiraling.
could it be,
that's what i liked about you all along?
you were meant to be easily forgotten.

but, try as i might,
your words still send silent echoes down my spine
and i will never shake them loose
