BOCCHERINI, Luigi 19th February 1743 – 28th May 1805 Boccherini was an Italian composer and cellist. His father sent him to study in Rome at a very early age, but then went with him to Vienna where they both played at court. In 1764, Boccherini returned to his birthplace, Lucca and played in the theatre orchestra there. He went on a tour with one of hid friends (Filippo Manfredi). They arrived in Paris in 1767. Boccherini composed some string quartets and trios and sonatas for piano with violin accompaniment while he was there. Their success led to an invitation from the Spanish Ambassador inviting them both to Madrid. Boccherini was appointed composer to a man named Don Luis, who then died in 1785. The remainder of his life was full of ill health. He was employed in 1800 by Lucien Bonaparte to organize and compose for his concerts. He remained in Madrid for the rest of his life. Boccherini’s music uses many sweet melodies and is very gallant in style. In some of his quartets, he also uses instruments to imitate birds and other country sounds. His most successful works were his quintet pieces.
