MUSIC LISTENING GAME

COMPARE AND CONTRAST

The aim is to compare and contrast two short extracts, looking for similarities and differences.

Each small group will compete with the rest of the class.

PREPARATION

• A number of tapes and tape recorders with two contrasted extracts of 15 seconds each.  Each tape will have three different extracts.

• A computer with MIDI files can be used.

• The MIDI files on this site can be used

Each small group has a tape recorder and a cassette tape with two extracts and 15 minutes to write down clear sentences which compare and contrast their musical elements.  During this fifteen minutes they should  listen to the music as often as possible. and write down their sentences and numbering them.   Each list is given to the teacher for safe keeping for the duration of the class activity.

The full class as a large group of individuals then have the same listening activity compare and contrast .  Whilst the extracts are played in succession three times with thirty second pauses between,  The class each write down as many points of similarity and difference as they can find. The recording and timing are controlled by the group who first had those extracts.

The small group will gain a point for every item of proof they can find that is clearly explained and is not repeated in other numbered points.  The rest of the class will then listen to the three extracts three times and produce a list each.

• The large group will gain a point for every original fact of similarity or difference.

• The small group will gain a point for every original fact of similarity or difference.

• The difference in the points will determine the marks of each small group.

• The small group with the most points is the winner of course.
