Marking keyboard playing

1. Giving the performance piece a level of difficulty.

Starting level Basic description  of the tune played with the right hand on a piano or electronic keyboard. Basic maximum marks
Level 1 mainly 3 different pitches with repetitions in the rhythm 25
Level 2 Up to five different notes in the tune. Infrequent chord changes 35
Level 3 Five different notes some harder chord changes 45
Level 4 A longer composition with six or more pitches and more difficult rhythms and at least 3 different chords. 55
Level 5+ Each piece presented can be assessed on its own merits 65
The range of marks available can be increased by the following extras: Marks will be lost for the following errors: (up to 5)
  1. Add the rest of of the tune if the original is an extract. (10-20)
  2. Play the tune on a second instrument.
  3. Sing the tune whilst playing where there are lyrics.
  4. Add a bass note with the left hand.
  5. Add chords with the left hand.
  6. Add a simple texture left hand
  7. Add a more advanced left hand texture.
  1. Hesitation in performance.
  2. Poor technique. i.e. using very few fingers or inappropriate technique in performance.
  3. Start a second time.
  4. Using the wrong hand for the tune.
  5. Errors in pitch, rhythm and chords.

The extent of each of the above will determine how many marks are lost.

After an assessment the student should be told:

NB: resultant levels should equate to an aspect of National Curriculum level in performing when divided by 10. i.e. 35 is a NC level 3 for this aspect of music.
