NAME OF WORK OR A DESCRIPTION

Title, Composer, General Type e.g. Symphony, pop song etc.

DYNAMICS AND SPEED

Dynamics - Quiet, loud, getting louder or softer, one part standing out or in the background.

Speed - slow, fast, getting slower, getting faster, many notes to the beat, one part faster or slower than the others.

TIMBRES AND INSTRUMENTS

Timbres - Tone of the instrument or instruments combined e.g. harsh, smooth, full tone.

Instruments - One instrument, set of instrumen ts.

Name the instrument used/the synthesiser tone used/ effects e.g. vibrato, tremolo, chorus, distortion

RHYTHM AND MELODIC OUTLINE

Rhythm - Sounds on and between beats

Melodic outline - smooth, jagged, no clear melody, short repeated motifs, sequences

Question phrase and answer phrase

PITCH AND PITCH RANGE

Definition of pitch - the notes used e.g. major, minor. Atonal chromatic pentatonic, modal

Pitch range -  set of notes used e.g. High, low, middle, wide range, narrow range

ARTICULATION

Definition - The type of movement from one note to the next.

e.g. smooth melody, staccato melody, slur, accent

N.B.

  • Different parts can have different articulation e.g. smooth tune with staccato bass

  • Different phrases or sequences can have contrasted articulation

TEXTURES

Definition - The number of parts at one time.

  • Single part, many tunes at once, chordal

  • Stylised accompaniment textures, Match, Waltz, Rock 'n' roll

 CHORDS AND HARMONIC PROGRESSION

  • Chords - concordant, discordant, major, minor, complex, jazz chords, chords used for effect

  • Progressions - smooth, basic, complex, cadences

FORM/STRUCTURE/DESIGN

  • Question and answer phrases - repeated sections/phrases

  • Does it have a known form? e.g. ternary form, Rondo form, Verse-chorus

 

HISTORICAL AND ETHNIC RELATIONSHIP

  • Pop, Classical, Folk, ethnic origin (part of the world, country)

  • Age - in what century was it written (plus evidence/ reasons)

OTHER COMMENTS

  • The composer? - name

  • How similar or different is the piece from other examples of its kind?
