Brief 5: Blues Project

The main task is to learn the 'Morning Blues' . After learning the tune and bass more creative elements can be added as would be expected in this style of music

• adding improvised fills
• adding a more creative accompaniment in the bass and chords
• adding further verses
• some may go on and add a 12 bar improvisation after a second verse.

Further composing activities

• You could sing other Blues pieces and learn to accompany them.

• The computer, sequencer could be used to provide a more complex backing. Students could input the accompaniment and then use the looping function to support improvising new tunes. Improvising new tunes is called ‘jamming’ amongst Jazz musicians.

• You might also go on to create a new Blues composition with new lyrics, improvised fills and accompaniment, write it down and perform it.
