How does a long composition stay sounding good?

For musical compositions to continue to sound good when they are longer there needs to be a balance between changes and repetition.

  • Too much repetition and it becomes boring

  • Too many changes and it will not make sense

Ternary form and Rondo form are two musical structures which are used to make compositions last longer.

Can you see how repetition and change are used in these structures?

Ternary form: ABA

  • Draw a sandwich viewed from the edge.

  • Then label the three sections ABA

Rondo form: ABACA

  • Draw a multi layered sandwich

  • Then label the five sections ABACA

Can you make a poster showing drawings and other ways to show ternary form and rondo form?
