 Performing instructions
  1. The shapes represent sounds and move from left to right.

  2. The big shapes are loud and the small shapes are quiet.

  3. There are sometimes two parts at the same time.

  4. The high sounds have a high pitch and low sounds are low.

5.      Triangles -  sing "boom"

6.      Arrows - sing "sh"

7.      Rain drops - quick clapping

8.      lightning - sing " zzzzing"

Try other vocal sounds that could be used to describe each of the shapes above.

 Composing activity

Explore the use of voice sounds to create different images, e.g. windswept hills, eerie space, humming machines/computers. Ask individual pupils to suggest other images and demonstrate how voices could be used.

Further activity

You could then create their own graphic score and write down instructions for performance.  The instructions should explain use of pitch and loud and soft sounds.

The scat sounds on the Sol-fah jazz pate can be used.
