BANGIN Creating percussion using your mouth, comparable to scatting.

BEATBOX Going back and forth between two different records, manipulating them, using your hands on the records as well as the crossfader to create (or 'play') a totally new beat.

BOX BREAK Raw Drum beat with/without minimal instrumentation...i.e. 'when a song breaks down into just the beat'

BREAKBEAT a: A funk drum beat digitally doubled in speed, a breakbeat used to simply be the part of a hip hop song where all the music but the drums stops; b: Genre of electronic music derived from breaks, created by drum machines & live drums programmed and quantized for mixing purposes. A type of dance originating from dancing to the djs back spinning drums 'breaks' of records. Influenced by many other traditional forms of dance as well as gymnastics, martial arts & tribal dances.

BREAKER CHILL Relax, Breathe, Take a load off,

CRAB An ultra fast scratch where fingers resemble a moving crab when performed. All the 'crab' action occurs in the crossfader hand, while pushing the record forward or backward with the other hand. Essentially, you use your thumb to counteract hits from the fingers with the right amount of tension to "bounce" the crossfader back and forth. All the while, keeping the crossfader as close to the side (sound off) position as possible. Depending on how many fingers you incorporate, determines the amount of notes you get per record push.

CREW Group of friends that you hang, practice or work with.

CROSSFADER The device on a mixer that fades between two different sound sources (usually turntables)

DOWN a: ready to do something b: cool (person) Example: "He's down" A style of electronic music that is more beat-oriented than ambient, but not quite as earthy as trip hop, generally a slow bpm

DOWN-TEMPO DRUM & BASS A style of electronic dance music that is otherwise known as jungle, but sometimes features less complex beats and a prominent, rolling bass line. Some also with a heavy jazz influence. Also referred to as "D&B". Instrumental reggae; pure dub is a rhythm track with special effects including some altered vocals (example: lee "scratch" perry)

JUNGLE or JUNGLIST A person who who loves jungle music &/or drum & bass (i.e. dj, listener, dancer, etc.)

LAYERING LYRICS Rhymes, A composition of words & phrases in the form of poems MC Master of Ceremonies. RHYMES Lyrics, Raps, A composition of words & phrases in the form of poems A snippet of sound taken from any source to be used out of context

SAMPLER A recording device that makes sounds accessible to a synthesiser or computer (Once a sound has been "sampled" and stored on a computer or synthesiser, it can be played on demand. A sampler makes it possible to reproduce unlimited sounds like hand clapping and laughter on a musical keyboard.)

TECHNO TRANCE A style of electronic music that is hard, pounding, high energy and characterised by prolonged build-ups leading to dreamy breakdowns

TRIP-HOP The art of manipulating vinyl records to produce new combinations of sounds using turntables and a mixer

TURNTABLISM TWIDDLE Type of scratch pattern combining the 2 finger Crab & the Flare Something that sucks, bad, unfair, evil, smelly, sad, upsetting, stressful, terrible, awful, unsatisfying, generally not a good thing
