Cadence exercises 1-10

Read the following:

Notice that it is not so much the notes that are important as the chord that the notes represent. If you listen to the chords only it is easier to hear the cadence.  

Example 1 (perfect cadence)

Exercise 1

Look at the chord sequence given in example 1.

1. Write the roman numerals under the bass part
2. Write in the bass part using the roots of the chords and semibreves.
3. Write an alto part under the soprano part.
4. Play the example above.

Example 2 (imperfect cadence)

Exercise 2

Look at the chord sequence given in example 1.

a.      Write the roman numerals under the bass part

b.      Write in the bass part using the roots of the chords and semibreves.

c.      Write an alto part under the soprano part.

d.      Play the example above.

e.      Play example 2 followed by example 1 and notice how the question phrase ending in an imperfect cadence followed by example 1 the perfect cadence provides a satisfying balance of phrase forming a complete musical sentence.

Exercise 3

Write the name for each of the cadences at the end of each phrase. (Example 3 and example 4)

a.      Write the roman numerals under the bass part

b.      Write in the bass part using the roots of the chords and semibreves.

c.      Play the example above.

d.      Write an alto part under the soprano part.

e.      Play example 2 followed by example 3 and note down the effect of the whole phrase.

f.        Play example 2 followed by example 4 and note down the effect of the whole phrase.
