I do not believe in the complete subjectivity of tastes; I think that it is objectively true that Leonardo da Vinci is more significant than Beavis and Butthead. That said, I am the first to say that there is a lot of subjectivity and preference involved in matters of creative or artistic judgment. You and I may simply disagree about the worth of a particular movie (or play, or book, or whatever), and we may both have valid reasons for our opinions. This is perfectly alright. My reason for writing these reviews is not to impose my tastes on you or anyone else (I am not sure how I could do that, anyway), nor is it necessarily to convince you that I am right. All I want to do, and all most critics want to do, is to share my enthusiasm, my knowledge, and yes, my opinions--all with the ultimate purpose of encouraging dialogue. I do not want you to avoid seeing a movie because of something I said about it. In fact, I hope for exactly the opposite--I hope that you will see a movie that I have reviewed, even one I may not have liked much, so that you and I can compare notes.
Now, if you still want to send me a vicious email because I'm not totally in love with your favorite science fiction movie or teen sex flick, go ahead. I promise that I will use your email strictly for entertainment. If not, feel free to go back to my movie page, or to my home page.
