Lighthouse

p. 17

I have always swam the sea
diving from island cliffs
and bobbing with the ducks
but I like to keep the cliffs in view
as I am more land than sea

on one cliff, there is a lighthouse
once left burning for the great man
but the beacon only brought in the pirates
and the light was doused
I see it now, from just offshore
a useless monument to a tempting ideal
blind to its own impotence

one of the ducks gives me warning
before I come too close
to a dangerous current
The sky is gray with encroaching fog
and I shriver in the silver sea
stroking hard to keep warm
Closer in, the water is warmer
and I can float just beyond the surf
before I go home to the fire

Ionian fog enwraps the night
and the lighthouse is buried
in a living white shroud.
