The poem "Homeless" is about sex abuse and possibly rape.  The poem is a very painful poem.
The girl in the poem remembers she was initiated to sex at an early age. She remembers she was sexually abused by an adult male.

The poem reveals the girl has images of an adult male and her innocence:

"Little as I was-
I saw parts of the
man's body, not
comprehendng their
harm to my short lived
bloom immediately or the
devastation of my beliefs
yet to come."

This poem is about memories of sex abuse.

A sex abuse victim does not understand the event at the time the victim was having sex with an adult. But as she grows up, she recalls the undesirable event or images of the sexual event.. She finally realizes later that the sexual event in her childhood days is wrong. As the poem goes:

"Never understood what
was wrong... until after
the damage was long
complete and done. "

Sexual  abuse or initiating a child to sex at a very early age can be devastating to a child.  The child will either grow up sexually promiscuous or  unable to form normal relationship with the opposite sex. The child may even lose faith in God as the child grows up. The child may also  grow up confused, angry,  distrusting and having a low self-esteem. Some may grow up suicidal or some may grow up drug dependent while some may become child abusers themselves.

Persons who initiate children to sex at an early age are just evil. In the Bible, Jesus Christ said "Woe unto the person who destroys the child's faith in God. It would have been better if that person would not have been born."

This poem is very  interesting especially to people who can relate to the poem or who has a similar experience of being introduced to sex as a child.

Surviving sex abuse can be a long battle for the victim emotionally, mentally, socially, sexually  and spiritually.

This poem is nominated "Best Poem of the Year 2004" for the Muses Review Awards 2004 for Poetry..

Homeless

I thought I went for
my escape to a different home.
Far away from those horrors;
it was my only comfort zone.

Little as I was-
I saw parts of the
man's body, not
comprehendng their
harm to my short lived
bloom immediately or the
devastation of my beliefs
yet to come.

Never understood what
was wrong... until after
the damage was long
complete and done.

I Know I Had A Birthday

Mom and myself, a wise
two days old, are released
from the hospital. Daddy
wasn't there to pick us up.
I heard mom waited a few
hours, then finally called
someone for a ride. Didn't
mind then. At 14 though,
I found out. At the exact
same time we were must
waiting and waiting, he was
screwing around with one of
his numerous girlfriends. By
this point, all my other blusters
with him were beginning to
bubble around me hard, so I
was orbiting stiff. I haven't
gotten around to asking him
who got my birthday present that day.

The poem "I Know I Had A Birthday" is a poem about parent/s forgetting a child's birthday. It is a poignant poem.

This poem reminds me of the movie "Sixteen Candles" but this movie is comedy. The female character played by Molly Ringwald in the movie is angry because her family forgot it was her birthday.

In Katie's poem, the girl is 14 years old when her parent/s forgot about her birthday.

Parents forgetting the birthday of their child can be a sad or painful experience for a child especially for teen-agers. The teen-ager will either feel their parent is insensitive or irresponsible or unloving. Some teen-agers will think that their parents are so busy just to avoid the emotional pain.

I wonder how many teen-agers experienced this embarrassing situation where their parent/s forget their birthday.

The poem is nominated "Best Poem of the Year 2004" for the Muses Review Awards 2004 for Poetry.
