II. Poem of the Month (August)

Homeless

by
Katie Davis Steward
Source:
The Beginning of the Tumbling (2004)

I thought I went for
my escape to a different home.
Far away from those horrors;
it was my only comfort zone.

Little as I was-
I saw parts of the
man's body, not
comprehending their
harm to my short lived
bloom immediately or the
devastation of my beliefs
yet to come.

Never understood what
was wrong... until after
the damage was long
complete and done.

III. Poem Review

When I read the poem "Homeless"  in the poetrybook
The Beginning of the Tumbling by Katie Davis Steward, I was surprised. This poem shocked me because this poem was about sex abuse of a child. I wondered if this poem was fictional. I interviewed the author of this poem and Katie said that this poem is based on a true story.

People who experienced being abused sexually will be able to relate to the poem. The poem shows that a child, having sex with an adult, does not know that what it is doing is wrong. The last two stanzas reveal some important insights of sex abuse. The female character in the poem remembers the sex incident that occurred in her childhood days. Her beliefs (ex. in God or in men) would be destroyed later in life..

"I saw parts of the
man's body, not
comprehending their
harm to my short lived
bloom immediately or the
devastation of my beliefs
yet to come."

The character in the poem says the sex incident is not understood as wrong but later in life the victim realizes the sex incident is wrong but the damage is already complete.

"Never understood what
was wrong...until after
the damage was long
complete and done."

This poem received a gold medal for 2005 Muses Prize - Excellence in Poetry Published for its relevance, positive insights to sex abuse  and social redeeming value.
