Poem # 11

Mean Thoughts

by Katie Davis-Steward
Source: The Beginning of the Tumbling, p.91

Not suffering from writer's block,
but from hand block. I try to make
the phrases that have come from
my brief notes go to the paper, but
it's almost like I have forgotten what
I really wanted to write about. The
ideas don't care; they persist as if
they are angry at me because they know
they are important enough to expand
and make a damn good poem. They
push me until the point where I can feel
it physically in my chest with an acute
pressure. It does not go away until
all the ideas get their chance
to star as a poem.

Poem #12

Writing My Rights

by Katie Davis-Steward
Source: The Beginning of the Tumbling, p. 71

Even as I do this right now,
I feel as though I only write
about my own thoughts too
often. I do try various
techniques, such as ideology,
current events, writing in
response to another writing,
or about something I see.

The truth is, writing about those
things are not my strong points,
so I only let them come out when
they appear there, which they do
sometimes, thankfully. I don't search
for them. I started to think this
was a bad thing when I realized I
had only finally found my own style
and my own voice.
