Book Review : Phonetical Imagery
By Andrew C. Angus

Title of Book: Phonetical Imagery
Author: Mark H. Stellinga
Price: 15.95$
Printed in: Iowa City, Iowa

Mark Stellinga's book Phonetical Imagery consists of 67 poems. He likes to compose his poems metered and rhymed i.e. traditional poetry. He does not write free verse in this book. .

Some of Mark' s poems are what I call "masculine poetry" since many of the topics of his poems are masculine activities such as sports or bar scenes. . He writes poems about billiards, basketball, baseball, bullfighting, fishing, bar brawls, beer drinking, - which are all activities that men are usually engaged in.

He has two poems about baseball "Old Babe" and "Memorabilia".  His poem "The Hustler" is about billiards. His poem "First Drink" is about beer drinking. His poem "Two Stepping"  is a funny poem about bar brawl. His poem "Round Ball" is about basketball. His poem "First Fish With Gramps" is about fishing. The poem "His Pistol Was Black" is about bar scene in the Wild West.

Mark is a businessman engaged in antiques. So, this explains why some of his poems are related to his antique business such as "The Auction", "On Original Condition", "On Antique Automobile Restoration", "Reflecting on Collecting Antique Typewriters", etc.

He does not have a background in Creative Writing but he knows the basics of writing poetry. Some of his poems like the "4 Seasons", "Old Babe"  and " I Came Upon A Mountain" are excellent and could be classics in poetry  someday.

He shows his sensitive side by writing poems about nature, friendship and romance. He also likes to write poems about Christmas.

Many of his Mark's poems are narrative poems, that is, story-telling poems where he is the narrator. He tells a story about a salesman, a baseball player, fishing, computers, etc.

Mark's book will be enjoyed by men who like sports and the antique business. His book is not for effeminate men or "girly men".

You can read samples of Mark's poems in this online magazine.
