The daylight whispers subtle warning
To the rising sun of early morning
The robin and his melody
Seek shelter now in yonder tree
The sunbeams shimmer in their fear . . .
The lady of the night is here
The creatures of the day will flee
As the lady comes so mournfully
And as the maiden softly cries
The mist descends from off the skies
Some wound, some hurt, some hidden death
Is carried on the lady's breath
No clue is giv'n, so none knows why
The lady of the night doth cry
Though men have tried, and cried, and strove
The lady won't yet stoop to love
With eyes downturned, and lips apart
She traps mens eyes and steals their hearts
Her beauty's that which men can't see
For her body's clothed in mystery
She seduces men in am'rous dreams
Revealed inside the full moon's beams
Men don't know, to their shame
From whence the lady of the shadow came
The sun, and moon, and starbeams came
All envious of lady's fame
The sun, so strong in his own eyes
Demanded darkness' quick demise
But the moon and stars would not allow
Any harm to touch the maiden's brow
But sufficed they were to hear him say
That the lady should be locked away . . .
Forever captive was her fate
In a cell that rendered no escape
With chariots of roaring flames
The schemers met her when she came
They masked her eyes, preventing sight,
And made a pris'ner of the night
Betrayed, alone . . . entrapt, beguiled . . .
And the lady of the night just smiled
The sun, in pride, showed all its might
Having wone the war with lady night
It shown with fervor, lust, and power
Growing hotter ev'ry hour
And me in desperation sought
Relief in shadows, finding naught
Men found no route to run away,
So cursed the light of father day
The piercing heat and parching wind
Turned friendly warmth to heinous fiend
All shadow left its former place
To search for mother shadow's face
The men were blinded by the light
And pleaded, crying, for the night
So finally the sun, in shame
Before his mistress humbly came
He beckoned her to end his hell
And melted down her captor cell
And lady night, in softened grace
Smiled through her veiled face
And so the lady now roams free
In places you can almost see
And when the vengeful sunlight beams
She steals, unsee, through dark day-dreams
And though all men will always vie
For a cofner in her fleeting eye
She searches for a man who flies
To wed beyond the starry skies
A man who soars to places higher
With wings of black, and eyes of fire
To carry her to lands unseen
Where even night has never been
The sun, in spite, must still give way
To the evening of ev'ry day
And when a child cries in fear
you know the lady must be here
Floating on hidden air
Her eyes entrapt in unseen wheres
Her tears in secret sadness raining
Down to earth, and darkly staining
The eyes of all who turn to see . . .
The lady of the night is free.
