Ashburn Hill by Fallulah 2001
She died on a bright Saturday morning in February. It was the first nice day in months. The sun shone upon the snow outside her hospital room. Brett sat beside her bed with his hand on her silky brown hair. Her eyes were swollen shut and the beeping of the machines was the only sign of the life barely pulsating in her body. The car accident had taken her to a new state, one that Brett had never seen before. She was quiet, no laughter filling the room, no shine in her eyes. Her family had left him to say goodbye. How could he say goodbye to the only girl he had ever loved? A girl who he had spent a quarter of his life with. A girl who he took to graduation on his arm. A girl who he had shared beautiful love with for the first and only time. How would he walk through the rest of his life without her bright spirit beside him? He kissed her warm cheek and took her whole self into his memory. This would veritably be the last time he sees her face to face. The last time he sees her athletic body, her thick lips and her perfect hands. He kissed her once more and told her he loved her and would never stop loving her for as long as he lived.
The funeral was held three days later. Her family and friends gathered to share in the shock of such a loss. The words that were spoken did little to console. She was buried on Ashburn Hill and it was all Brett could do not to jump into the cold, deep ground with her. He had vowed never to let her go, how could he let them put her into the darkness. He would do anything, give anything just to let her live one more day. See the wind blowing the trees in the cemetery that day, the sun shining on their faces, hear the birds cawing above their heads. He cursed the heavens. He cursed the damnable snow, the laws of physics that made her die. That day as everyone left the grave he knelt in front of her tomb reading the words engraved so carefully yet telling so little of the life beneath it. He then stared up at the sky and felt as though her eyes were upon him. When they were together he could always tell when she was looking at him. Her eyes as powerful as lasers. He could feel them that day as he was left alone with her memory. He rose to face his life ahead. Knowing full well that one day, if there was such a place, he would greet her smiling towards him in heaven.
