Abortion:
An Atheist's Perspective

Alright, abortion is a controversial thing. Everyone has their own opinions. The only thing I ask you to remember as an undercurrent for this entire thing: some people are so grounded into their own opinions that they cannot even consider anyone else's. This includes both the people who adamantly believe that NO ONE has the right to even suggest what a woman should do with her body and the people who adamantly believe that abortion IN ALL CASES is absolutely wrong. So if you are either of these, you should not be reading this because you will just get mad and write me hate mail. So in order to not waste your time, I am telling you in advance, I am not agreeing with either of you so you can just fuck off. To the rest of you, the kind of people mentioned above will probably always be around, and they will make fools of themselves, and you should just do the best to ignore them. On to the actual body of this.

I think we can pretty much all agree that abortion is a generally bad thing. As we can all agree that there are certain situations in which abortion would be appropriate. We may not agree on the situation, but I will address that as it comes along, k? [Note: I'm not going to go into the physiological shit right now, there is a lot of that, but I'm too lazy right at this moment to go research.] Alright so we have probably hundreds of situations under which a woman is pregnant and she doesn't want the baby. We have rape, incest , unwanted teen pregnancy, a wife is unfaithful to her husband and the resulting pregnancy, the mother's life is in grave danger, Siamese twins where only one baby can live or else both die, etc. etc.. I'm pretty sure that in all of the cases where there are big risks of death of the mother (or another baby, in the case of Siamese twins) abortion is understandable, if not acceptable. Otherwise, things get icky.

Thins get icky in that the mother is physically capable of carrying the baby to term, and she has some reason for not wanting to. Some people would want to force her to give birth (or not allow her to get an abortion legally). It can definitely be said that a percentage of these mothers would be desperate enough to go and get a sreet abortion (read: back alley and coat hanger), which would be bad. [I don't know what percentage, I apologize for my lack of memory.]

My solution to this tangled knot of a problem? Have America pull the big stick out of her ass and actually TELL people about sex. Yes, TELL THEM. In school. Real stuff, not just the watered-down shit we get at school in the 8th grade when half the school's already fucked around. Start maybe in the 5th grade, explaining physically what happens and explaining protection. Explain to the kids about abortion: how it's done, what happens, and why you SHOULDN'T. And show them how adoption is a much better alternative. And explain to them about birth control, and MAKE IT AVAILABLE. Explain about the morning-after pill and make it available. If this happens, then the children will be prepared and educated about sex and protection and STDs and pregnancy so that they'll know to use a condom, and they'll know how to put it on so as not to break it, etc. etc. so that they won't be in a situation where they'll want to choose abortion.

Of course, parents could teach their kids this NOW without waiting for a school program, but they're parents! They're not to blame for anything, right...?
