Club:
History
At one of
the earliest branch meetings, the committee of Dominic and David
Doran, Shay Quinn, Mark Murphy, Barry McDowell, Paul Fay, Terry
Holland and John Magee fixed the membership at 50. Such has been
the interest in subsequent years, we are now 150 members strong,
and getting stronger every year.
Without doubt,
one of our major strengths is the close knit friendly, family
atmosphere. We cater for all ages, from our youngest member at
a mere 6 years of age, namely David Holland; to our oldest member
the infamous Kathleen (Kassie) McCullough who was born on the
13th January 1918 !!. As you will see from our "Profiles
Page" Kassie was made an Honoury Member of our club during
the 2000/01 season, and we are all very proud of her. The warmth,
humour and attitude of the Downpatrick members is second to none,
which makes the trips to Old Trafford a fantastic experience.
One of the
most significant moments of our club history happened back in
September 1994. At this time the Club in the form of Terry (Towser)
Holland sent a letter to David May asking him to become the first
president of the club. The rest they say is history!! In his first
message to the club he stated that he was only too eager to accept
Towser's offer and went on to state how "proud and honoured"
he was to become the first president of the Downpatrick Branch
of the Manchester United Supporters Club.
We have been
very lucky to have gained such an active President. David has
over the years literally 'bent over backwards' to help us out
in any way he could, and his efforts have been more than appreciated
by the faithful support in Downpatrick.
