On December 23 2001 Steve Duggan will begin a solo kayak journey down the length of Australia's longest river, the River Murray, with the aim of raising funds for SANDS (SA) Inc. (Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Support). The trip will begin at Yarrawonga, Victoria, and will finish at the rivers end, the Murray Mouth, just beyond Goolwa, South Australia |

To achieve the 2000km distance
in 6 weeks, Steve will have to paddle an average of 50 km per day, with no
rest days for the duration of the trip. There will be no back-up support team, so all equipment will be carried aboard the kayak. Provisions will be topped up along the way wherever possible. To enable all monies raised to go directly to SANDS, Steve has covered all costs associated with the trip himself, and will continue to do so throughout the course of the journey. Steve's last fundraising effort for SANDS was a 1150 km solo walk along the coast from Melbourne to Adelaide. Once again there was no support crew, with Steve pulling all provisions behind him in a specifically made trailer. Steve's reward will be the satisfaction of pushing himself to new limits, providing valuable support to a worthwhile cause, and the many experiences he will encounter along the way. |
