Excerpts from Steve’s diary: (further diary entries can be seen on
Steve’s website)
Tuesday 25
December (Christmas Day)
Got up early to the sound of a large tree branch falling, Kangaroos around
camp and Koalas grunting all night!
Tuesday 1
January
Got to sleep in a comfy bed with a pillow and quilt so ended up sleeping
in and got a lift from the farmhouse back to the river with the kayak. A
bit of a slow start. Very very windy, nearly got blown over a few times.
Struggled badly all day. At one stage, I had 10 eagles hanging around
above me for nearly an hour. I must have looked like I was about to die.
Saturday 12th
January
Had to shift the tent twice last night because it kept falling down. Pegs
couldn't hold against the wind in the sand. I figured that I stayed at 826
last night. Everything seems so much clearer by daylight and there are
camp spots around. You just need to find one before you park!
Have stopped at 792 for lunch. Liquid rocky road is interesting. Saw a
little black pig today - it gave a shriek and bolted off when I snuck up
on it. Stopped and looked at the wreck of the Emerald Barge - now home to
a mob of goats.
