Puppetry:
There's more then just the Muppets?
Toy Theatre
Shadow
Toy theater was like picture narration, yet it was a live performance that allowed one person to stage the production. The characters were able to  be defind easily as major and minor roles. Emotion was also able to be performed.
Shadow puppetry has orgins in the East. The shadows are produced with materials that of different colors on a screen with light behind the object. Shadow puppetry is good to show a time elapsed and flying.
Water
Pictures
Water puppetry is a form of puppetry that was performed mostly in Vietnam and China. Water puppetry was used to tell sories, but the method was very rough and at the mercy of the element which also limited the control of the performance. This form required many people to manipulate a performance. This form usually did not include any talking.
Pictures have been used for many centuries in most of Europe and Asia for storytelling. The pictures were used mostly in this time for religious means. It was portable so that the story could be told in different places of the city.
Hand
Mask
Hand Puppetry was used for a comedic performance that used small puppets that shout, fight, and kill. Punch and Judy are an example of this form. The humor of this form is the ability for the puppet to come back from a beating. The puppets are made of durable wood or paper. The stick and swazzle are used to manipulate the puppet.
The use of masks in a performance allows for the mask to become a part of the performer's body. The emotion of the performance is one changeable with the change of a mask. The mask allows for the performer to be many different things such as animals or deamons. This form is found in the East and Europe.
String
Body
A string puppet is great for performing flying, dancing, dematerialization of the body, and disappering. The string puppet is popular in India, China, and Europe. This form was favored due to the larger posibility of movement. This form grew with the cities and fairs of 17th and 18th centuries.
Body puppets are used mostly in festivals. The body puppet allows for a larger than life puppet that usually requries many manipulators for a single puppet. The movement is usually slow and lacks speech, it is replaced by music. Mickey Mouse in a Disneyland parade is an example of this puppet.
